Pencil and paper, maybe?
I'm serious about this, coming from a background in design. I always start with a pencil and paper to play with the design. It's easier to play with design ideas. The computer (even with my Cintiq tablet) always gets in the way more than a pencil. Then worry about the software. Because once you have the design, you have a better idea of what capabilities your software will need. You might get away with a $20 photoshop subscription, or even an iPad app for a couple of bucks. My logo for my app was designed with "InkPad," an ipad app that's about $4. Best regards! Scott |

The Adobe suite (Photshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc) is considered industry standard. However, if you're looking to design promotional materials, it might be better to invest in a professional designer to provide those services for you.
I have a design and marketing company and would be happy to talk to you about what your needs are. I also provide printing services as well. I have seen far too many performers try to design their own materials and the results are usually drastic. Most have no artistic nor marketing abilities and fail to incorporste specific criteria needed to promote themselves effectively. |

I have Photoshop elements and use it quite a lot. However, for my promotional materials I use a professional designer. Yes it costs money, but the results are far superior, as would be expected. - Mike

Several MagicCoach members have been using http://fiverr.com to generate both ideas for flyers/business cards and in some cases strong finished artwork.

I'm a believer in getting things happening. Fivver and other sites like it can make that happen and happen quickly.
My main designer charges $150 an hour. His work is great, I'm happy to pay that, I use him a lot. But if I want an assortment of ideas, I'll write a brief and spend $25 on 5 people to come up with concepts for me on Fiverr. I tend to use some of the same people and try out some new ones each time. You can check out their portfolios online. Depending on the job, one of the finished concepts may be adequate. I do quite a few giveaway cards, & custom cards for specific events or effects. If the idea is good I can also then choose to pass on the concept to my main guy and get him to add his touch to a concept we may not have come up with together. Just one way of using it |
