I have the opportunity to pick a copy of this up at a fairly low price from a friend of a friend. I did a quick search on the Café' and cant really find much info on it. Can someone please give me a rundown of the book, thougts on the material, maybe a TOC?
Thanks. |

There's an informal, meandering review in Genii, Oct 1989 (vol 53 no 4), pp 246-7.

Anyone have any thoughts on it here at the Café'?

Its one of my alltime favourite card books.
If not my favourite. I've had this book since it came out and id never part with it. It is absolutely rammed with excellent magic from cover to cover. Some of the methods are very easy, some are a bit tougher, but they are all magical. I perform a lot of magic from this book and have for years- its strong material. And in learning these effects you will learn valuable sleights as well. Overclock is my alltime favourite clock trick. Did You Get the Odd One? can close any card set. A Dime A Dozen is my favourite tabled four ace revelation. - Anything I Can Do, You Can Do Better - The Randy Revelation - Spectator On Stage (best spec cuts to and turnsover four aces ever) - How Did You Know? (One of my longtime pet tricks) - Do You Feel Lucky (anytime anywhere anydeck miracle) -R.W. Four Card Stunner - Reverse Reverse Rise Surprise - Exploding Aces... and so much more. I cannot recommend this book enough. I hold this book in high regard. excellent magic. Buy it, study it, perform it. I think you will agree. |

Thanks Magicfish, I appreciate your review of the book. After reading what you wrote I feel that I will go ahead and buy it. The guy is only asking $25 for the book, so I think that would be a pretty good investment on my part based on what you said.

This book is $45.00 so you are getting a deal, and it is still on Randy Wakeman's website. The only thing I did not like about the book is that he uses sleights from other sources. Being he did not get permission to republish any of the referenced moves, you need to buy all the other references to exactly know what his is using. The references material is not the standard text normally used, it is special publications that by now are impossible to locate. After I looked up many of the text years ago before the Internet, much was to expensive just to find out about one move in a publication. He does not give enough information on the moves to know exactly how it is executed. Thus I have not ever learned even one trick from this book. Once I got above 10 references, I closed the book and have never opened it again.

Could you give me an example, Bill?

This was not my experience at all. I don't recall even one sleight that wasn't described in the book.

I'll be picking the book up this evening. I plan on spending a few days and just going through each effect one by one and then I'll post my thoughts, good or bad.

Maybe some Marlo moves that appeared only in the Magazines at the time? I thought Randy did a pretty good job describing the various passes and other moves..is that what Bill meant? I can't check the book because it's one of the many books I lost when I moved in April 2012.

Its possible, but then all card students have Marlo on their shelf for reference right?

I don't share magicfish's rave; but nor do I share Bill's rejection. I like his handling of the Three Way plot. Spectator Cuts the Aces is nice, although not the method I use. I very much like his ending to Give Us This Day our Daley Aces, although I use a different handling.
It is an interesting book to read through; I find it stimulates ideas. I really don't like Mike Maxwell's writing style, but I didn't have problems following descriptions. But then, I've got a lot of books on card magic. Overall; I wouldn't put it in my top 20 books, but I'm glad to have it. One thing I found curious about the book; it says the pre-illustrative photography was of Marlo's hands; I wonder why not Randy's? |
