Greetings everyone,
I have been asked to sell a copy of the Magic of Robert Harbin for someone. I know the book is valuable but does anyone have any idea what a price it should sell for. I have had an offer for the book but want to get the best the best deal for the seller. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Happy New Year to you all by the way! Regards Scott |

Anywhere from 15 dollars to a couple of hundred dollars - depending on condition. What edition is it has anyone signed the inside cover? etc.
You want to know too much without giving enough information. Dave |

As I remember the book was sold with a pre-signed agreement. It sold for $100 back then.
The book has a lot of ideas, but I personally don't think it is of much value, except to a person who can actually have the tricks built, and that takes a real craftsman, because there is not full info disclosed to actually build the illusions. I would not sell it for less than a $1000.00. But if you are happy and can sleep at nite for less, then, whatever that amount is, is what you should take. Remember you have storage care, etc. you have envested just so this other person can now possess this historical book. Don't let anyone downplay its value. Bill |

Be careful about selling this book. I know of at least three versions of it that are out there. There is the numbered original, a numbered photocopied version (all with the same number, and an unnumbered version, the last two of which are pirated editions. Someone sold a copy of the photocopied version this past week on eBay for around $365 (item #3586571479).
I'm sure someone here can tell you what the number is on the photocopied ones so you'll know what to look for. Amos McCormick

There are a lot of fakes out there, though. If the book is genuine, it will be on A4 paper, and the paper will be smooth. I've seen some real ones and some very good fakes. Real ones go for around $1000 or so. I paid $900 for mine a few years ago, so the price has fairly well stabilized.

I have been very surprised by the estimated values of the Magic of Robert Harbin book.
I am the Hon. Sec of a Magic Society in the UK, and we have a copy purchased by the Society on behalf of the members in 1970. It is in absolutely mint condition, having been kept in the original brown paper dust cover, and in the original box it was posted in. It also has a receipt dated August 23rd 1970, for the sum of £27.10, and signed by Robert Harbin. The dedication page does not have a name entered as it belonged to the Society members. We had no idea of the value of this book. Until now! It is an incredible book, the illustrations are absolutely amazing for a magic book. Every illusion has detailed plans, construction details and complete routines for their use. The plans even have complete measurements of nearly every component part. A fascinating read. This man was a genius!

To Scott Penrose. You must have sold it by now but some years back it was being resold (in England) for £600. That must be close to £900 now. I've often thought of selling my copy but............! Do e mail Chris Woodward in Bournemouth or Bernard Juby. Both are collecting who owns the book and which numbered copy. They both might have a more up to date idea of the value.

Dear Allen and Clayton
I sold it last year on ebay...it sold for over $2500. I was selling it for a friend and he was delighted with the price. The high price was achieved becuase it had its orginal bill of sale and a handwritten letter from Harbin thanking the purchaser for buying the book. I have sold another Harbin book recently and reckoned that the going rate is about $1100 to $1400 depending on condition etc. Regards Scott |
