Hi all,
I'm interested in how people manage so many props with so few pockets! I am putting together material for (hopefully) some close-up work in the future, and this is one potential problem I can see - the routines are coming together well, but there's only so much you can carry, bearing in mind the need to organise props well, so that you can go straight to it when th time is right, etc. Cheers Ian |

Hi Ian--
There is an entire forum devoted to prop management ("Where to Put It All") a few lines down from this area. You will find many discussions here as well, but that might be a good place to check out for tips. |

I do the the odd walk round gig. When I do this is what I carry and were.
- Right pant pocket- Sponge Balls and purse frame, - Left pant pocket- Rope, - Right back pocket- Coins, - Left back pocket- A small card wallet with cash card and driver licence. - Right waist coat pocket- A deck of cards, - Left waistcoat pocket- Egg bag, - Top waist coat pocket- Silk hank, Jumbo sharpie, And a gint paper clip that I use in stead of my mout for a card to mouth trick I do, I also use the clip to hold cards if a idont have a table. Left and rigth index fingers- Rings, wrist- rubber bands, I also keep business card hidden in the hat band. I have a small leater doctors bag which carries a water bottle and cereal bars as well as a extra deck of cards and may be a few bit for a palour type show just in case. Chop cup and 6 card repeat for example. For pocket management use effect which fit in one pocket. Some effect require you to start with two coins in one pocket an three in another. This adds problems there is time as you talk to people to move things around. I prefer not to. I work so every thing goes back were it started and is re set. If your using gaff or stacked deck. You mark the packet with a sharpie so as you you pull them out you know which is which. Or use invible tape and by touch you van tell.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Thanks for the reply yellowcustard, all good tips. My biggest worry is being able to go straight to the right pocket to pull out the right kit at the right time.
Thanks again for replying Ian |

Most of my work is strolling. I do change a few things once in a while, but here's what's in my pockets on an average gig.
Right jacket pocket, regular deck of cards, coin purse with 4 coins and shell. If it's a casual gig and I'm in jeans, the coin purse goes in the little pocket on the right side. Very easy to ditch in that tiny pocket. Left jacket pocket, wallet containing 2-3 packet tricks and blank face cards for ACR and card to wallet. Left pants pocket, 4" brass ring and shoe string. Right pants pocket, nest of wallets and Lightning box with Chinese coins and ribbon for Charming Chinese Challenge. Inner breast pocket, 2 Sharpies and occasionally wand for ring on stick. Back right pocket, Mesika Wallet, with business cards and bill set up for $2 Tear and Greedy. Also a few rubber bands and silk handkerchief. I'm a big believer that to keep pockets organize, you need to do more with less. I have about 25 routines that can be done FASDIU with no or very minimal set up. I have 3 with the coins and shell. 2 different routines with the Lightning Box. The wallet is gaffed, and has props for about 4 other routines. The wand, handkerchief and rubber bands are for ring on stick, but wand can be used for byplay, David Williamson's routine to produce coins, also coins through silk, and rubber bands for crazy man's handcuffs. With just what's in my pockets, I have about an hour and a half of magic. A few larger props in my case behind the bar. So my advice on pocket management is learn to do more with less....no one trick decks etc., and if you have to carry or wear something, find a use for it....wallet, keys, phone etc. |

Great stuff, thanks pepka. I like the 'more with less' line, that seems to sum it up for me. I already decided to only carry a regular deck, as this alone could give you a good 5 mins of material.

Yellowcustard n Pepka have given sound advice. I too believe the same. Dedicate each pocket for a purpose, practice it from the same pockets. Even if you do in your sleep you shud be placing the exact same items in the allotted pockets only.
All the Best, Raj. |
