I want to add something to the reference to Dick "hunting" porcupines, because I think that's misleading and though he killed a number of them, the major underlying reason was they were chewing on his cabin, and he suspected it would be dangerous to his survival to allow them to make a habit of it. He wondered why they chose his cabin to rasp. It seems he wasn't aware they were most likely seeking salt. He attempted relocating the "offenders" but they returned with barely a blink. I won't argue he developed a bit of a taste for porcupine but it was something I think he certainly would have handled differently if he'd known the reason the porcupines targeted his cabin and others. He fed mice in a safe area to keep them from harmful food seeking and I'm confident he would have done the same with the porcupines. I'll post more details on this later, here:

It's possible. To me it's not an issue at all because I don't struggle with any dichotmies and/or seeming contradictions between love of wildlife, conservation, preservation, harvesting animals etc. There is no moral dilemma involved as far as I'm concerned and probably none as far as he was concerned either. He had his ethic, just like everyone else has theirs. We know some of his thinking through his writings, the rest is speculation.

Fair enough, Marlin, my point was just to say that to lump the porcupines in as though they indicate "pro-hunter Dick Proenneke" would be misleading. And as I recall, I mentioned Dick Proenneke in the first place to support the point that hunting and loving wildlife are not, in my opinion either , necessarily mutually exclusive.

Well yes I agree, I don't consider the killing of nuisance animals that are basically on ones doorstep "hunting" either. Nor does the killing of animals alone make a person "pro hunting". Anymore than the killing of livestock does. Would Proenneke consider hunting porcupines for meat, or even for their quills, ethical? I honestly don't know.
To me trying to determine if Proenneke was "pro" hunting or "anti" hunting, especially based on what he killed, or why he killed it, is a bit of a useless argument that really doesn't amount to much. And I've probably engaged in too much of it myself here. He is one of those guys, like Aldo Leopold, that people always seem to want to to claim for "their side". I'm not overly interested in that. I mean I guess it's an interesting debate but in the long run I'm not sure if it could ever be answered to anyone's satisfaction, or what would be accomplished by establishing that one way or the other anyway. But to your point, I agree that a person couldn't really make the case that Dick Proenneke was "pro hunting" because he killed some porcupines that were destroying his cabin. If they hadn't done that damage, or if he could have kept them from doing it, it very likely that he never would have killed them. Regardless of his hunting background or record I think it's safe to say he was never in favor of the wanton destruction of animals. |

"For answers, you need look no further than the Copenhagen Zoo's Facebook page, where it celebrates the birth of a baby giraffe (possibly Marius) in 2012. Humans, science has shown, are drawn to babies of all kinds; we love the big eyes, the floppy limbs, the fluff and fuzz of infants. Baby leopards, baby pandas, baby elephants ... baby giraffes. They all draw huge, paying crowds to zoos."

There are some zoos that do bad things, but I think most are in the business of conservation of species. Trying to get pandas to shag and whatnot.
We have a zoo here called Cat Tales- I've heard some bad things about how they treat their students/staff, but they do rescue poorly treated big cats that would otherwise be put down and that can't survive in the wild. And how could anyone who has looked a silver backed gorilla in the eyes advocate for their extinction? Pros and cons to everything.
