Hello there!
I guess it's only right for me to introduce myself before I get involved in the rest of the Café. I've been comfortable on the stage as an actor, musician, and storyteller since forever. I've had at least a distant interest in magic since I was about 10 or so and discovered the shelf full of magic books at the library and got a copy of Mark Wilson's book. I practiced a bit but with no audience, I found other ways to spend my time. This Summer I was part of a traveling arts carnival (http://carnivalderesistance.com) as a storyteller and musician. One of my buddies decided our midway needed a mind-reader. He came up with a silly little routine and I realized that 1) people *loved* it 2) I had lots of ideas for effects kicking around in my head and 3) I had definite opinions about "the effect" -- the sense of wonder that I wanted every member of the audience to leave with (he wanted to recruit people to give up details about their friends before they came to his little show) So, when I got home I did a little searching around and I found a copy of 13 Steps to Mentalism and Royal Road to Card Magic. I've also joined the local ring of IBM. As an audience member I'm more interested in mentalism, but I've put more time so far into basic card magic. Beginning this June, I'm going to start traveling indefinitely. I guess it's sort of a personal pilgrimage: something I've had a vision for for a long time. I want to learn as much as I can to be able to give people I meet a sense of wonder and maybe put on impromptu shows here and there. |

Welcome joby,
With your varied background you'll make a good addition to the Café. It is always fun for knowledgeable Magicians to help a newer Magician who already has a good skill set in place. -Mary Mowder |
