Not going into specifics was Slydini the first to publish this style of holder or someone else?

I guess semantics will be at play here, but Tony Kardyro (Señor Torino) described his method in "Dovetail Deceptions". One could argue that this is essentially a holder that is open the moment the steal is made. It was published in 1955. Not sure of the date of Slydini's publication.

I looked for my Marian Chavez Encyclopedia of Dove Magic for a publication date and could not find it. Anybody know its' publication date?

The revised paperback edition was released in 1979. Not sure what was available prior to that. Would Slydini's method have been published in any of his books?

Without going to research material, as far as self releasing, the sleeve and sock holders would be the earliest that I know of. Chavez was a college that WW2 veterans could get a degree as a magician in sleight of hand magic. That sleeve and sock holders are shown in the printed material.
A Mexican magician was the 1st magician that produced doves, but his was not from holders, but were from his scarf that was over his shoulder. His name escapes me right now. The 1st magician to produce doves from scarves was Channing Pollack according to my reading. I think his was more his design of dove holders that could easily release a bird. Channing Double Dove production uses the needle release that Slydini used in his design. The sock and sleeve was already invented, but I have not ran across any magician's name that actually used this holder in an act. Slydini's dove holder is kind of an offspring to the sleeve holder, as the bird is sort of squeezed out of the holder. I made of the Slydini holder described in the Chavez book. Then there is Johnny Brown the Texas magician, who come had some interesting designs. The dove bag with snaps release is published in a little booklet, that was originally published in very large format with a pattern. That was published by the Kanter Magic Shop. In the end no one knows the exact timeline as there is no historical record foundation that kept records of such things. Now that everything is more about video, I doubt that anything will ever be published in the future. Maybe we need a documentary historian, to document some of this history. Channing Pollack seemed he never wanted to discuss the creation of his act. Franklin, the taxi cab driver that Channing gave all his act material to, never published anything either. |

Bill, his name was Cantu.
http://www.all-about-magicians.com/aj.html He was probably not the first magician to perform with doves and pigeons, but may have been one of the first to feature them, and build an act around them.

Michael, I realize that doves were most likely used in Dove Pans and such by magician of the day. I was of course speaking from the point of view of producing them in the hands. As this topic initially started as discussing holders.
Cantu, is who I was thinking of. As I remember, it was mentioned that he was the 1st professional magician to produce doves magically without cans, boxes, or pans. I always wondered exactly how his productions were accomplished, as it was stated that he did not use dove bags for the birds, and produce them from silks as Channing did. I would think that his productions were not all that great compared to today's magicians. Unless he used the strongest misdirection ever used by a magician. Anyway, from the little I read about him, he was the 1st to produce birds from a secret body position. |
