I have been doing magic on and off(cards mainly) for 5 years and although the people at the magic store disagree I do suck bad at it. Anyway as a glotun for punishment I asked the magic store owner about something to start doing some coin magic...or trying to, they sold me the tango slipery shell for the half dollar. Not doing anything with coins before I'm lost as to what the hell to do with it. I was told its a better buy then the magnetic scotch and soda as many people are familiar with that trick. Help

What reference material do you have - Books, DVDs? You need general magic reference material to progress.

Get the standard scotch and soda easier to use because you can hand it out. Great gaff coin to start out with. It got me interested in coin magic. I use dime and penny version a lot! A shell is hard to use unless you've got some sleight of hand knowledge. Get Mark Wilson's Cyclopedia of Magic has a lot of great tricks including shells. Great value paperback

I got the magnetic scotch and soda in exchange and am learning coin magic.
On a second note maybe someone can answer this. I do card magic and 98% of the time friends, family and magic store customers love it. Why then do I feel like I'm terrible at it and failing?

Quote: confidence? You've been practicing for five years, but how often do you perform tricks for people other than friends? I've only just started going out of my way to do things for people I don't know and I always feel like they are seeing everything I do. When my friends used to try to get me to do stuff in social situations for people I didn't know I'd just say I didn't have cards on me, or something like "I'm really not that good". It's a comfort thing most likely. The more you do it the more comfortable you'll be.

Welcome Gbhunter77. Bobo's Coin Magic is a classic. It is now available in paperback and is inexpensive. With this book you will learn the basic sleights. Good Luck to you.

Many recommend mixing in some self working items with your sleight hand; builds confidence and your routining skills ... sounds like you are already doing that having a Scotch and Soda set.
What JD wrote above rings true. I also recommend investigating Cups and Balls; there are many principles there that carry over to other magic categories. Good luck, Bruce |

I have done cards for a very long time and still can't understand how I do not get cought. I started on cups and balls with the Ammar DVD. I do rope magic although not very much.
I have been at this a bit and yet never have even attempted to approach someone or done a trick for more than two people, they usually have to ask several times. Most times I say things like "I'm not very good", "I'm only training" or just lie and say "I don't really do any tricks". I have tried to overcome this mental block so long. It really hurts being so recluse. Since I had a very deadly illness that I so far overcome(4years ago),its gotten worse. Since then I have lost close friends and have become very nervous when doing tricks for anyone, its so bad a person I did a card trick for asked me if I have the" Machel J Fox dissease" is there hope here or am I just wasting my time and money.

On the occasions that you do perform a trick or two successfully, how do feel afterwards?

It feels great that it worked and I could do it. I feel pride(don't know if that's a good thing)
But it fades so fast, and all the negative things push back in. I must be a nut!
