Recently I was thinking any time I have any sort of flame (candle, ect) or flash paper burning, it would be wise to get a nice large fire blanket and have it on the ground. I was wondering if there's anything even more flame retardant than a fire blanket that might do the job even better?
Also out of interest, does anyone know if you were to spray some carpet with a ton of fire retardent spray, how much difference would it make? How many more seconds would you have compared to regular carpet? How much more flammable would the treated carbet be compared to a hardwood floor? |

WallMart used to sell a large mat to go under a grill that was fire retardant, bought one and cut it up into close up pads. Didn't see any for sell last summer, bummer.

In my experience with candles in the live theatre, they generally go out when they hit the ground/floor. It's important to not use one onstage that creates a large pool of wax. That is mainly because liquid was carries heat and can give you a burn or just solidify on carpet or other fabric and ruin it. It is the melted wax vapors that burn though, not the liquid wax. Still, it is always best to have a stagehand or somebody who can act as such standing by offstage with a fire extinguisher whenever live flames are being used. And, in some municipalities it is currently illegal to use live flames of any kind in a theatre.

Don't spray your carpet with fire retardant. If you're using a candle there's virtually no way that dropping it will set fire to a normal carpet. A fire blanket is certainly adequate unless you have containers of flammable liquid, in which case (aside from not using them) I would think about a mechanic's oil tray or something like that.
