In another thread, Lobo notes that the Stones great(est?) song Gimme Shelter was never released as a single. Yet here it is now as one of the most celebrated songs in their catalogue. This got me to wondering about other songs with similar life histories.

How about Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah? Not a single for Cohen, and it sat in obscurity for nearly a decade before it became a part of every other movie soundtrack and every talent show and goodness knows what else.

Others?

The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

I have loved the band "The Who" since the late 70's. I was told they never had a number one hit in this country. They set a record for fastest selling out concert in the 70's, and never hit #1. Weird

Gotta say I was surprised by Rock Lobster and It's Rainin' Men. Seems like only yesterday.

Not #1 is a different category than "wasn't a hit".

I believe "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf only made it to #35 on the top 40! I believe that fits the category.

Agree. But I'd include "Hey Joe."

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

"I'm a Lumberjackand I'm Ok".

Would that qualify? It is certainly iconic, but never made any top selling lists (that I know of).
