Harry promoting his books is no different than all the Ellusonist guys promoting the new "best release of the year." No different. If you guys had published works filled with genuinely good routines of IMPROMPTU card magic, you probably would promote your stuff too! I own none of Harry's work(currently studying the Royal Road), but from watching some clips of him on YouTube, I can say he's definitely one of the most ENTERTAINING magicians I've ever seen, if not the most entertaining! In fact, I wish he had more videos out there for us to watch. Sure, some of the tricks may use similar methods to others, but the presentation he puts on it makes it very interesting. Besides that, a book with over 50-150 tricks will provide you with far better value than the $40 reused, gimmicky trick that just came out.

Quote: the obvious difference is that I don't see those guys putting down the people that suggest other things, they simply suggest them. Where as I've seen harry talk down to many people because they left his tricks or books out of a thread asking for certain things. And in the "new to magic" section none the less. Is that how we as magicians want to greet The newcomers into the hobby? By calling them idiots because they didn't know about some books written by a grumpy old preformer?

Harry,
I recently stumbled upon your linking card routine. It has become my new favorite linking ... anything routine. I have a few of your books and DVDs. I purchased your memory system many, many years ago, and still use the concepts. Not as well as you do, but I use them. However, if I were to purchase one single DVD you have created, which would you suggest? That may seem like a difficult request, so let me elaborate. I would like to get just one of your DVDs, perhaps the best card DVD for great effects that don't take years of practice. I have a set of card effects that I do, most of which I have developed on my own, some of which don't look anything like where I learned them from, but are adaptations of some wonderful card magicians, but I would like to add just one or two "Harry Lorayne" inspired card tricks. Anyone who can "last" 50 years in this business must be DOING SOMETHING RIGHT! Mr. Lippo got into a somewhat similar "difference of opinion" in another post several days ago. "Halo" everyone.
I like Mr Grippo and Mr L. Both have influenced my choices and thinking Though I do more coins than card I surprise myself when I decide to share card stuff with my audiences Only had the pleasure to meet one. Seeing Mr Grippo in Vegas was one of the perks from working out of Reno in the early 80's. Harris at. 60 Still too old to know it all .......

You know what is really sad about Harry Lorayne?
Unfortunately, he has probably forgotten more tricks than everyone on this thread combined knows. You know what is even sadder? He probably still remembers more tricks that everyone on this thread combined knows. My mother once told me "If you can, give people what they want... and for Gods sake, give them what they have earned." I think Mr. Lorayne has earned just a little bit of latitude. For all you have done, and all you continue to do... Thank you Mr. Lorayne. P.S. I have never met Harry Lorayne. Maybe one day I shall. |

Thanks for "them kind words," 1KJ. Fortunately their are thousands of times more of people like you than there are of the mlippos. Difficult to answer your question re: "Which DVD volume." All four are full of impromptu card stuff. What might be helpful is for you to go to my magic website - third one listed under this post - click on DVDs, etc. Click on the "Best Ever" DVDs and I believe you'll see contents. If you have any questions, you can ask them at my personal email address - that's the first one listed under this post. Best - HL.

"Charlier Ace cut production"
That's the one where you get a break after doing the Charlier Cut and then use your middle finger to push out the card that was formerly on the buttom of the deck, right? I am working on that right know. How do you manage not to flash the card before turning it over? Right now I hold the deck close to my chest in my right hand and point my fingers to my left, but it feels kinda awkward. Is there a way to do this trick while pointing your fingers towards the spectator? |
