Hey guys, as strange as it sounds, I currently do not have a 3 card monte effect in my arsenal. On a couple of magic sites, I came across Gypsy Monte (I'm sure there are more than one variation out there). The cards are designed to look older and back in the day. The patter also sounds logical with a con man trying to hustle a gypsy lady. Gypsy monte looks like a solid effect. Does anybody know of or can comment on this one? Or, how does this monte rank among the other 3 card montes currently available? Or, What is your favorite 3 card monte effect? Thanks guys for weighing in.

Michael Skinner's Three Card Monte is very good. Pretty much any presentation could be sued with any method.

To me the magic of the Monte is it being done with regular cards. Any effect that removes that in my view removes some of the impact.

Gypsy Monte is very good. It has a strong presentation and a nice kicker ending that allows you to turn all three cards to the Death card.

Yep and no offense is exactly my point. It removes the impact.

Stand up monte is my favourite monte... I use it all the time.
skinner's monte is good if you have a surface to work on. an un-gimmicked 3 card monte with the folded cards is great, but it requires more practice (and also a surface). 3 by steve valentine is good (i don't have it, but it looks nice). gypsy monte is bascially a version of color monte which is very popular. a lot of people do this routine, but I personally like some other versions. but in terms of an ungimmicked monte (without using the folded cards)... then gypsy monte and color monte are very good. here's a performance of stand up monte: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2Ct3Dm8Boc |

Mark Mason's Penguin Live lecture has a nice simple monte you can do with regular cards.

Yea to me again it takes away from th idea. But that does not make it a bad routine. It is just preference is all. I have never been a fan of tricks that need special cards.

The classic 3 card monte, no gimmicked cards is a great tool to have in your arsenal. But if you do a routine with gimmicked cards, your handling should bypass spectators' suspicions that a gimmick is being used. I practice and perform the ungimmicked 3 card monte, but also use Wolfgang Moser's "Miracle Monte" and Garret Thomas' "Stand Up Monte".
We need different tools to match our venues and audiences. Just my opinion. |

Here's the presentation of The Gypsy Monte (sold as The Gypsy Curse) that made me want to add the trick. I find it very smooth and engaging with an outcome that makes sense.

That was engaging? The outcome made sense? Aside from the racist implications of "don't turn your back on a Gypsy" the handling of the trick is looks quite forced. The beauty of the 3 card Monte is the fact that it is so natural.
Hey different tricks for different people. Works fine for me. But thank you for making my point about the 3 card Monte.

I used to be a "no gaffs" monte guy but "stand up monte" if you are right on top of people and "three" if you are a little further back are so strong I have not looked back
Both of these tricks can get gasps and I never got gasps with my standard monte although I am sure some do |

Just to be clear, that is an entirely different trick than Gypsy Monte. But I like it.

Hey, Dannydoyle - I take your point about the racist implications, and I alter my own presentation to something like "That's when he turned into an honest man," as the moment to show the backs of cards. And, well, yes, I like the presentation of the old cards, the antique ring, the parchment. And I think that if the counts are smooth, then it's just a nice magical story that's right for some settings. I think it would be great as part of a volunteer show in a nursing home, for example. But this isn't really a monte, is it? This is a story about a monte -- about a scoundrel who cheated people with his monte and finally met his match. They're different routines entirely. The original post was about Gypsy Monte, so that's what I followed. I like 3 Card Monte just fine, whether presented as a gamble or as the more friendly "never play this game" presentation -- the same sort of choice you can make with the 3 shell game. Anyhow thanks for the feedback and the chance to kick these ideas around. Take care, David |

Does Garrett Thomas have two different Montes out? If I go to Penguin Magic or Magic Geek and search for his Monte two items will come up....one version for 15 dollars...and his newer one for 30 dollars. Did anyone else come across this or know of his other version??
