A meeting of the Florida Ventriloquist Association on 3/9/2014, resulted in a enjoyable afternoon for all.
The meeting was opened by President Lee Wolfson. Over 20 people in attendance including, Lee Wolfson, Donald Woodford, Macolm “Denny” Denemark, Harry Schwab, Mark & Jody Wade, Ed Thomas, Jimmy Vee, Margaret Davis, Jim Teter, Mark Edson, Tom Dahl, John Parasi, Uncle Ray, Larry Larkin and Milton Rene Mazariegos. Attending for the first time, Roland Mitch, Kimberly Bell, and Dick Finnegan, all looking to venture into ventriloquism. Snow Bird, Virgil Norgrove was also was present. Tom Dahl, updated the group regarding “Give Kid The World.” GKTW, is a nonprofit resort in Kissimmee, Florida for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families from around the world to experience a memorable, joyful, cost-free visit to the Central Florida attractions. To participate in the Give Kids the World show project show being organized, volunteers need to complete an on-line application, and then attend a two hour Volunteer Orientation session. It is hoped that a show can be scheduled for the week of April 21 or week of April 28. Mark Wade, reminded the group about Vent Haven conVENTion to be held July 16-20, 2014 at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott, Hebron, KY. Don’t delay making your reservation for the conVENTion, as hotel rooms reserved at the special convention rate are filling up. Mark & Jody Wade, Ken Groves and Tom Crowl are moving forward with great things for Maher Ventriloquist Studios. A organization for vents has been started, “The International Ventriloquist Society”, (IVS), membership is $35 yearly. This will give members access to an on-line newsletter, which will feature videos, articles and information to help you be a better vent. The Detweiler “Maher Course of Ventriloquism”, on line ventriloquist courses and audio booklets are also available. Members receive a discount on product purchases. Harry Schwab, Ed Thomas, Roland Mitch, Lee Wolfson and Virgil Norgrove (with a 23 year old, beautiful Brandt Gilmer figure) entertained the group with performances. Show and Tell included, Malcolm “Denny” Denemark with a skull that Kevin Detweiler reworked to include a ball and socket neck and moving mouth. Mark Edson, fresh from KAX-Kidabra, with a Axtell Magic Drawing Board, Jimmy Vee, with a “Thistledown Puppet” Shunk/Monkey, Nite Pad Surprise II and other assorted goodies. Margaret Davis, with Axtell, “Edna” with a stiff body rather than the normal foam body, which enables it to sit upright without collapsing. Donald Woodford showcased, two basswood figures carved by Tim Cowles and painted by Conrad Hartz. A Charlie McCarthy replica, dressed in a Black Tux with tails and a top hat, finally there was a Mortimer Snerd replica. Mike Palma will be performing at the Orlando, Bonkerz Comedy Club, March 14 & 15, 2014. The next meeting in May, (date to be announced) will be at the home of Lee Wolfson and Carol Stein. Mark James Marks will be the featured performer. Mary Thompson Hunt, a actor and improviser for over 30 years, will conduct a improvisation work shop. Sure to help you with comedy writing. “Truth in Comedy” is a recommended reading. Bar-Q-Que will be featured on the menu. |
