The search engine is horrible!
I want to find any info on the DVD "45 with Jay Sankey" If I search for- 45 sankey I'm told that a search word has to be at least 3 characters. Now I search for- sankey dvd I set it for "all the words" "all forums" "no time limit" Seems like a reasonable search to me.... But I'm told I have to set more parameters! I get this constantly. Apparently it wants me to also select a particular forum. I don't understand why this should be necessary. AND, if I want to just "guess" what forum it might be in, and try to select a forum from the drop down menu, the forums are so disorganized. Actually, they're organized alphabetically, which makes no sense. Only the secondary forums are listed. So, instead of searching in "the good, the bad, and the garbage" I have to find the "sub-forum" under that forum which would be "tricks and effects" or something like that... Confused?? SO AM I! I haven't been to the Café for some months now. Was the search engine changed? Because I don't remember it ever being this difficult to search. Also, it's frustrating because I'll make a post asking a question, then someone will say "this has been discussed many times, do a search..." and they won't answer my question. I would ALWAYS do a search before asking a question to avoid duplicate posts, but it's too difficult now to do that. OK, I'm sorry. Enough of my belly-aching. I love the Magic Café, but I would love it a lot more if this could be fixed. Thanks, Dan |

I appologize, I hastily made this post before reading the posts below about this very same topic.
Apparently, some people have no trouble with the search engine, while others do. I can tell you this, I'm VERY internet savy. In fact, I'm a part-time researcher on the Google Answers website, so my job involves nothing but using search engines correctly and effectively. Having said this, the Magic Café search engine is REALLY bad. I can figure out ways around it (use the google archives or search the site with the Google toolbar) but we really shouldn't have to do that. You need to make this more user friendly. Thanks for your time. Dan |

Danno, yes the search was changed several months ago and yes some seem to have a lot of problems with it. I used your example using these parameters. Search for jay sankey dvd, all the words. The engine is set to only retrieve messages within the last 90 days so I chose the default dates (do not use no time limit). The selection was all forums. I recieved a page of results, two of which we specific to 45 which is what you were looking for.
To look farther than 90 days, just change the date range to the previous 90 day period.

So, the 'No Time Limit' option is there, but you can't actually USE it?? Lol

You can use no time limit, as long as you're searching a particular forum.
Yes, it is ridiculous. -Jim ...full time computer programmer/web designer who is very frustrated with the layout/technology of the Café.

One thing to keep in mind is that the primary function of this web site is a bulletin board. Its secondary function is as a search engine. The search engine was modified (and from my point of view, not as good as it was in the past) for one simple reason. The people using the search function were sucking up most of the bandwidth. I know I would wait several seconds for a page to load. There were many discussions and the decision was made to go this route until we could get a bigger and better server (read money spent by people running a free service). We thought and continue to believe that the inconveniences brought on by the search engine are more than compensated by the improved speed of the Café itself.
Again, this is a temporary situation that has no date for completion at this time. I know this is not what you necessarily want to hear, but I hope you understand. And yes, the search engine is at times frustrating to me, too....but life is still good...

The subject of the new search engine with it's pros, cons and justification can be found by looking here. It should explain everything without rehashing the subject again. It's a length thread but worth reading through all of the posts.
