I chatted on Facebook with a wise friend who said he never performs magic that his audience isn't ready for. As a close-up performer he has a better chance of discovering how people feel about magic. As a platform performer, there's no way I can know the thoughts and worries of every person in my audience. That presents a problem if I want to perform, say, the Tossed-Out-Deck.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

I don't know if this is of any help, but I've heard that the card game "Rook" was created as an alternative to standard playing cards. I just checked Wikipedia, and its entry says pretty much that:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rook_(card_game) Quote:
Rook playing cards were introduced by Parker Brothers in 1906 to provide an alternative to standard playing cards for those in the Puritan tradition or Mennonite culture who considered the face cards in a regular deck inappropriate because of their association with gambling and cartomancy. It's possible that some people that have negative attitudes towards standard playing cards might be just fine with Rook cards. Then again, maybe not. Therefore, I want to echo what Vlad said and be sure to check with the head clergy/priest/minister. And if you check with more than one person and get different responses from each, err on the safe side and abide by the more restrictive response. And here is my own personal advice: When you're performing for or in a religious group or setting, make it especially clear that your tricks are just tricks. You don't want to give off the (unintended) impression you have any sort of supernatural abilities. -- Jean-Luc |

Theres a GREAT effect (or western Song) about a Soldier using a Deck of regular playing Cards as his BIBLE & PRAYER BOOK- in Chapel , He was brought to the Provost Marshal about disrespect in Church _ I"ve used it with Gient Cards and the different stories printed on the Back -I end about NOT being Judgemental until you find out WHY. It was very well received. I"M sure you can find the song??)-if not p/m me and I'll try to send more information) Ralph(russo)Rousseau

The song's "The Deck of Cards" by Tex Ritter. Good song and a good effect. Justin Flom performs a great variation of that trick HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGPKpIuX3cY.

I just received a Cross Card Castle from Smokey Mountain Magic's Gospel page; I haven't performed with it yet, but it is of good quality and very well made.

Use two card effects in program - 6 card repeat - on how Jesus multiplied the Loafs and fishes and the other effect is the story where a young man in the army was caught with a deck of cards in Chapel, explaining how his deck was a Prayer book- ace-God, 3 of any pip= 3 wise men - 52 card = 52 weeks = a year- etc. When starting the program with the cards do fake shuffel and say "OOOH _ playing cards!!" go through the "ARMY"effect, then use the verses about being Judgemental. - the six card repeat ,instead of regular card pips are drawings of Fishes and Loafs- so not really playing cards. Always a good response . If any negitive-response - quote the Judgemental and Forgive them Father for they no not what they do verses - don't be afraid to Judge them Back- read Pauls Letters - he told many off.

Russo,
I also have the fish & loves cards, but I don't consider them playing cards, since no betting is involved |

To all the other members that want a review of the card cross, I just read the request and it's Thursday so I need to rehearse and get ready for my weekend shows; I will write the review next week.
I'm meeting with a children's pastor of a church next week and I'll let you know his remarks also in my review |
