I am new to card manipulation, and I am looking for a video and/or book to get started. I would like to work on close up. For the most part, I'm looking to do work with unmarked cards. And I'm a visual learner, so I thought a video/dvd might suit me better. Thanks. --Phil

Hello Phil.
If you want to learn card sleights, then you should take a look at Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights (8 DVD series). This is a comprehensive resource which covers many aspects of card handling (eg. controls, shuffles, palms, multiple shifts, changes, lifts, etc). If you want to learn card manipulations, I would suggest getting Jeff McBride's Art of Card Manipulation (3 DVD series). It contains all the card manipulation techniques you will ever need (and more). An excellent resource. Take a look at some of the older threads here, I'm sure you'll discover a wealth of information on this same subject. All the best! |

Hi Phil,
McBride's DVDs are great, but if you are new to card magic, I won't recommend it; most of the sleight are very difficult for beginners. Encyclopedia of Card Sleight is very good as well, if you want to learn sleight. If you want to learn card tricks, then I think it's a good idea to start with Easy to master card miracles. Meanwhile, I am a "visual learner" myself too, but it doesn't mean that we cannot use books. For best results, use both videos and books. After you lean a sleight from a video, check it in a book too. Axio

Yup, if you're looking to learn some solid card routines, then you should take a look at Michael Ammar's Easy To Master Card Miracles (6 DVD series). I believe there are many classic routines taught in this series. Good way for a beginner to start off.

I would go with McBride... just from personal experience. I learned so much from those videos and am still battling Vol. 3!

I'm a huge fan of Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles. Each features about a dozen of the best effects in card magic. His teaching style is fantastic and most of the effects don't involve the use of gimmicks. I have Volumes 1-6 and can't wait for 7-9!

I started with Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights. This was after studying a book or two for a period of time. The downside, is that the 8 volume Dvd set is a little pricey. I bought them one or two at a time, over a couple of months.
If you want something quick and less expensive, maybe the Pearlman Born to Perform Card Magic is a good way to pick up some basics. I have a feeling that his Street Magic approach and youth makes his Dvd more appealing to younger viewers.
