Chair Suspension. Because of it's size, it helps create more of a larger crowd.

My (and by "my" I mean Mark Wilson's) sponge ball routine. When all the balls disappear at the end, I get some serious responses!

Although I feel like a sellout when performing it, it's Losander's "Floating Table".
It's a wonderfurl crowd builder because it has the capability of having no beginning,' middle, nor ending, thus allowing the performer to build and build and build until ready. cheers, Dev/ |

Along the lines of what Devious has mentioned I could see Bill Abbot's the Thing being used as a crowd builder. My second all time favorite is Miser's Dream. People seem to give a good reaction especially when you bring a child up as the volunteer.

Chris Capehart has a sponge-ball routine that is extremely unique, very funny and very very good for building a crowd.
It's on his kidshow DVD, but you don't get the full effect possible as you might seeing him do it in person (lecture or stage). If you watch it on DVD, ponder the busking possibilities and adapt it to an older audience (like I saw him do at his lecture in SF) you'll draw like flies. I tried it several years ago when I was working at a ballpark and could easily draw a large number of people almost instantly. Quote:

When hired for something like a silent/live auction combo where people have a lot of distractions you're competing with, little compares to this easy, fun, visual bit. I was hired to perform for "walk-arounders" on stage at a convention center at a huge art show. I was in no mood to beg people to "come over and watch my show" so I just announced the balloon sawllow for a few minutes on the microphone which did draw several and then cranked my "balloon swallow music" and by the time the balloon was gone and I looked up, ta da... a full audience had appeared, as if by magic.
