I'm sitting here and enjoying Paul Wilsons Penguin Lecture and I was baffled by the mentioned trick.
The simplicity is simply stunning! I understood the moves when I saw it, but it was soo simple that I didn't understand the method. Anyone else performing this? How do lay-people react? |

If you can really sell the concept verbally, this works well.
It's also the sort of thing that can be repeated immediately with the correct patter and presentation. I've done it in the pub before to good reactions. Simple yet effective.

Hey Montana. I'm a big Walton fan, but must be overlooking the routine you mentioned. My favourite card effect of all time is Roy's 'travellers in time'. I love performing it every time. Are the two related?

Two different tricks; Back Into Time is in Vol. II of The Complete Walton, Travelers in Time in Vol. I.

I perform Back Into Time a LOT and it really hits hard in the same way that Bro. John Hamman's Two Card Trick does, i.e, it's a psychological mind **** especially if you sell the effect as Ray has mentioned. PM me if you want to talk about the effect.

As I think Roy Walton notes in the write-up the actual performance is far stronger than the written description suggests. I get the sense that it partly works off a perception fallacy that strengthens this trick, especially the revelation of the initial card that was put into the enter of the deck. The double lifts need to be well executed and the need to turn the cards over aftervputting them face down on the deck has to be obscured. Definitely something more interesting about this than would seem to be the case if you only read the description of it.

The trick was published in the September 1973 issue (I think). In a later issue, someone had written that he had felt that this Walton effect would be overlooked and eventually forgotten or at least relegated to a sort of minor throw off effect - essentially what you are saying. It seems that was a prophetic statement. This is IMHO a really excellent effect and really bolsters Darwin Ortiz's and Dai Vernon's arguments about simplicity of method. I wonder if this gem was overlooked because the method doesn't require knucklebusting sleights o' death? |
