Hi friends! I have the original copy of The Jinx Magazine. They are getting stained and wrinkled and old. How should I handle or store them?
I was thinking of keeping each issue inside a plastic hard folder, and handle them with cotton gloves. Is it too much? What is the correct way to keep these historical documents? Thank you very much. With Love, Perl |

I'm not sure how thick those are, but I store things like that in magazine bags with backing boards, in a magazine box (all acid-free). You can usually pick those up at comic book stores in the U.S. - I'm not sure if that would be true in your country. You can see samples of them at bagsunlimited.com. Make sure you get the magazine-sized ones, though, not the comic book sizes, and I would always use a backing board with them.
I have paper ephemera and publications from the 1800s stored that way, and they work well. You can get fancier storage solutions in the archival section of gaylord.com (a supply company for libraries, museums, and archives), but I wouldn't bother spending the extra money. We don't bother with the fancier stuff in my library (I'm a public library director) - the types of things you get in comic stores and at bagsunlimited.com work just fine. Cotton gloves never hurt, but they probably aren't necessary unless you are going to be handling the magazines a lot. |

Wow! That's really really helpful! Thank you so much! For each issue of the jinx, it's basically just a piece of paper, folded in half. So it's relatively thin for each issue. How do you recommend storing them? Thanks grinning!

Leo Behnke has written a book, "The Conservation of Magic" to very thoroughly teach you the care of books and ephemera.

Comic book bags and backing boards are also a great way to store all those lecture notes and stapled pamphlets and instructions sheets.
