Hi Everyone!
I wonder if you can help me? As a new member, I would feel delighted to get to know everyone and talk with you about your interests and goals in magic. Although, I just began my career as a professional magician in Orlando last year, I have performed at a wide variety of corporate and private venues and met several great magicians through my association with Fantasma Magic and FAO Schwarz who have helped me become a better performer. My goals involve developing and expanding the speaking aspect of my business, performing motivational speaking programs for corporate training programs and school assemblies. I also wish to explore entering the trade show magician market. I am a member of David Copperfield's Project Magic, a program to help rehabilitate disabled individuals through teaching them magic. Any interested magicians with a desire to volunteer their talents can become involved in Project Magic. My favorite topics involve close up, walkaround, motivational magic, street magic, stand up/parlour magic, comedy magic, patter, Christian magic ministries, booking gigs, magic marketing, magic psychology, showmanship and handling hecklers. I read an interesting introductory chapter "Sun Tzu & Street Performing" from a book by Eric Evans called The Secret Art of Magic - Strategy for Magicians. Has anyone read this book? It seems that the book addresses my greatest area of development as a magic performer: handling hecklers gracefully. I wonder who might have some experiences or ideas they wish to share? Warmest regards, Julius Csizmazia Julius Magic P.S. Are any of you from the Orlando area? |

Dear Julius
As an old college instructor, I have experienced some hecklers...and some rudeness. One of the ways to deal with this problem is what I call the face down. When I would have a problem with a noisy person, I would simply stop abruptly and look at the person. Funny thing is that everyone else would soon be looking at the person and it often became very silent indeed. Then someone would usually laugh, or by that time I would have thought of the next step, which would be resuming where I had left off, or the put down. I don't like to do the put down unless the heckler is really nasty. A put down is just some remark appropriate to the situation, and dangerous because it can turn you into a Don Rickles if you aren't careful. Magic is supposed to be fun. Another way to deal with a heckler is to have him join you on stage. This is often satisfying to him because he gets the attention he wants, and to you because he can assist and he forgets to heckle. I never had them throw tomatoes or anything, and I think I would probably leave for the day if that happened. I would take that very personally. The worst of it is ,I always think of what the perfect response would have been as I am drifting off to sleep, too late to do anything about it. |

Hi Julius,
I enjoyed reading your introduction and it seems you have a lot to offer the Café. I would suggest you perhaps post this very topic that you've brought up on the forum - Food For Thought. I'm sure many there will be able to give your their ideas on the things you've mentioned. Welcome to the Café and please don't hesitate to post or ask questions of your own. |
