A peasant wanted to marry the king's daughter so the king said, "Take this test of courage and see if you are worthy."
He placed his daughter and an executioner in front of the peasant and had him pick between two envelopes, of which supposedly had written on them daughter and death but instead had written death inside both. After picking the envelope he married the daughter. HOW? I hope this is clear... Jeff |

Did he ask the executioner to take an envelope first? Or perhaps the king?

Easy, a magician choses. He destroys his envelope and tells the king if the remaining envelope is "death", the one he has chosen must be "daughter".

Bob Neale has a beautiful version of this puzzle as an effect in his wonderful book Tricks of the Imagination. I recommend this book to anyone who likes storytelling magic.
