Hello all,
is there any written sources about the Head on fire illusion? Who invented it. It is not very popular illusion but I feel it has good potential. I know Tora Magic build a couple of models. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlhEmVKbCYI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsNPYaClKbw Any more info will be grately appreciated. Thanks. Regards

Soleil, I created and constructed this one many many moons ago. (Note: the black cloth on the head is not (!) really necessary) |

I made one that is based on the Square Circle. In my spook show, it ends with my character's living body on display in a sideshow, with my burnt head hanging there, too. The display rack is based on the headless woman sideshow illusion (separate illusion).

Glad you like it. The idea was to give it a feel similar to the torture post in the movie Hellraiser. It was made from scrap lumber for the most part. I made some fake barbed wire and added a few hooks and railroad spikes just to make it look creepy. The blood stains were of course, just painted on. The wrist straps were salvaged belts from a thrift shop. I doubt the whole thing cost more than thirty bucks to make. If you understand the workings behind it, you'll realize that it has to be displayed in a "booth" of sorts to get a good illusion. That was never a problem because of how I used it.
The original show for this was in a sideshow arrangement. The audience was led along a fence line to view the various "things", each in a separate booth with a draw curtain covering each. Watch the movie "The Elephant Man" to get an idea of how such exhibits were displayed to the public. The format added to the ambiance. As we were operating on a shoestring budget, our "talent" played more than one role, leap-frogging with each other behind the scenes (kind of like Tony Curtis playing Houdini the Magician and then the Wild-man down the line). We had a girl who was in a Spider Girl type illusion where only her real head could be seen, and then two attractions down line, she was in this, and the audience could see everything EXCEPT her head. They never realized it was the same actor. A couple years later, I drug it out of storage for use in the spookshow, where I played a crooked pitchman who gets his just desserts at the hands of his freaks (idea borrowed from Tod Browning's film). It was then combined with the head cremation, which was combining the concept behind Abbott's Sacrificial Cremation and the good ol' Square Circle. It was the second time I'd made one of those. the original was too "pretty", so I made the new one to appear as if it had come from an old circus graveyard... rusty and generally more creepy-looking. I also designed this so the toasted skull could be brought out after the fire (cheapo plastic Halloween skull with a bit of embellishment added).

THANK YOU for your great input guys!
Very creative ideas out there! So if I understand, there is apparently no plans for this effect available and it is in the public domain?
