I remember way back when I had a Color Computer 3, a friend gave me a stack of color computer magazines.
One of them had a contest to see what you could do with ONE line of code. One of the winners was a program that wrote "ROY" on the screen and rotated it while it changed color. The writer said he was inspired by "Roy G. Biv" who he knew in high school. The author of the article said; "Roy G. Biv?" Who IS this guy? It took two years before I found out. I was at a Kinko's when the manager was telling an associate to set up the new display of felt tip markers and he said, casually; "And don't forget 'Roy G. Biv.'" So I asked; "Who's Roy G. Biv?" and he explained that it was an acronym for the rainbow. Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo and Violet. A few weeks later, we were watching "Beakman's World" where he was talking about prisms refracting light and he said; "Always remember Roy G. Biv" to which the character in the rat suit said; "Oh, who's HE? The guy who invented color?" So Beakman did a sequence of himself as Roy G. Biv, in a rainbow shirt and rainbow wig!

I do find it somewhat irritating that the general public (led, no doubt, by the DOD and other government agencies) has ***ized the term "acronym" to include all initialisms.
An acronym is an initialism that it pronounced as a word, such as NASA, SCUBA, or SNAFU. An initialism that isn't pronounced as a word is not an acronym: SPCA, ICBM, GPS, OCD, and so on. Sigh. |
