Okay, I will answer the question. It was maybe back in the 1990's or so, I attended a national magic convention. Harry was on the stage show. He presented a patter act that would blow anyone out of their seats. Yes, standard magic and nothing earth shattering. But he was surprisingly likeable and entertaining. Why, because he had none stop humorous patter for everything he did. It was not a description type of patter and most of it, if not all of it was directly from his 5 patter books (they are now all bound in one volume). The book(s) is called "Sleight of Tongue", by Harry Allen.
Was I rolling in the isles, no, but I am hard to make laugh. He is a likeable personality, and knows his show material, and is very professional. I was somewhat awe struck at his flowing funny patter during his tricks. I have not witnessed anything like this throughout a who show or act. Over time I bought all 5 of his books, and when I read a lot of the script, I did not see how the material really connection or referred to magic tricks. Some of the lines are close to the edge at 'blue' material. Funny when I watched his act, I did not hear or see anything like that. Some lines are also hard to deliver without the correct likeable personality, if you know what I mean. Yes, I learned a long time ago, Dealers are not your friends and cannot be your friends. They may talk kindly, but as soon as they say, "Have you seen this ... ", all the while you are trying to talk about something else that they cannot make a profit from, they move on to the next person, or go do something else. It is all about making a living and creating sales, which is part of business, not friendships. I am not complaining, only responding to all the comments of Harry being a nice guy. Everyone is nice while trying to get your money, they when they have, they are gone. I can say, when I interrupted his sale of some India junk Rice Bowls to an uninformed lady magician at his dealer display, he was not so nice. When I tried to get him to order a custom suitcase/trunk because he would not give me the local store that made them, he shut down and refused to respond to any further emails for a custom case. Just to much work and not so easy getting the money - I guess. He is a great performer though, not doubt in my mind. |

Interesting responses. The internet crowd is always a tough crowd. Seems he gets a thumbs up for what he does in general.

I worked a magic shop in Orlando many years ago and I would sometimes drive up to Daytona to visit Harry. Harry would always give me tips on how to be a better demonstrator, make my comedy act better and yes try to sell me something. There were some times I would ask about a trick and he would persuade me from buying it, saying it didn't fit me or it was junk. Harry also gave me some "life lessons" too, very honest and brutal sometimes. In my humble opinion, he's a great guy, great demonstrator and very funny. My 2 cents.

Harry hasn't yet reached his prime. He's a nice guy and very good at what he does. I've know him personally for about 6 years, and could say a lot of good and not so good things about him.

While there are 2 cents added here, I'll add mine again. I know wholeheartedly that Harry is making a "living" primarily selling. He runs a magic shop so of course, he has to sell. But, as far as his magic he's shown me, he's good. And, he has went out of his way for me when he really didn't need to. And, I doubt he got anything out of those deals. I personally just don't like bashing. And, I have learned from anyone I open my eyes and ears to. Being judgmental closes doors. I am not from Florida, so him helping me out means a lot to me.
Bill Hegbli did answer the question. I didn't know. Kenny |
