I have a rather odd shaped copper coin about the size of a half-dollar. It has the word "MASCOT" at the top with sitting jester like figure in the middle and what I believe to be "AEF" in cursive at the bottom.
The reverse has a wreath with several symbols encircling it. Seeking the origin of it. It came in a box of old English pennies I bought from a coin dealer about 20 years back. Harp |

AEF would be the Allied Expeditionary Forces, the name for the United States troops in WW I.
A Mascot coin might have been struck as a keepsake for English children and used as giveaways by the GI's or by some promotion or another. You might check with some of the numismatics groups on this one. You could have quite a find on your hands! Lee Darrow, C.Ht. http://www.leedarrow.com

Thanks Lee. I really do not have a clue about this one. I appreciate your reply.

Actually, Harp, I believe that the "AEF" are the initials of Anna Eva Fay who was sort of a spiritualist/mentalist in the late 1800's/early 1900's.
If you check the internet you should dig up some info on her. Good Luck! |

Good find if it is from WWI.

The coin is known as the Fay Mascot Coin I haven't done in depth reserch but the AEF stands for Anna Eva Fay and had the word Mascot, the figure more resembles a crude Buddha which makes sense with her claims of having the secrets of the Mahatmas - hee hee, the coin is known to have come with Fay's pitch book and is mentioned in a 1906 NYC court hearing. There two books on magicians' tokens. One is by William Kuethe and the other by Randy Fogard. The latter being more comprehensive and easier to obtain.
