Scripting (aka "patter", awful word) is, like other elements of performance, not just something that you "add on". In order to be effective, it must be well integrated with the other elements to which it connects. Otherwise, it's simply awkward and unprofessional.
I second the recommendation for Ken Weber's Maximum Entertainment. And remember that magic is a performing art. So go to your library and read books from the performing arts section.

Bang on the money, Doug. There's an old British army saying:
Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents P*ss Poor Performance. It's known as the 7 P's. |

Let's be fair to Alexander - the book really is quite awful.

And you both should be fair to Helms. It's not an ellusionist download, and it requires careful thought (long, slow reading) to appreciate, understand, and apply, but I do wonder what background, if any, you have in legitimate theatre, that would equip you to evaluate the book.

Another vote for Pete McCabe's excellent Scripting Magic, it's perhaps the most accessible book. Darwin Ortiz's Strong Magic and Weber's Maximum Entertainment will round out your education.

Just to clarify, my post was not meant to evaluate any work written or otherwise. It was more meant to reflect my thoughts on how many magicians approach their performances and"scripting" in general.

Read books outside of magic to inspire things to patter about.
