I need to do dove to streamer. I have done the vanish with tails, but this is at the end of my act after a costume change, with out tails. Is there any way to do the same vanish with out the tails? (for example a pocket in the pants.)

I did a dove vanish in my table for a long time. As you go to toss, your back hand just dumps the bird into a secure spot in your table, instead of tails.

Any methods using the body?

I think a tail ditch is about the only body method you will be able to use. Only because you can't just stuff a dove into a pocket that quick.

Is there a way to make a tail like pocket on pant?. Since I don't show my back since it is at the end of the act.

If you wear baggy pants, then you can have the pants pocket extended for a dove vanish. I know David Zirbel does a vanish like this in a Zoot Suit.

If you are wearing a jacket, why don't you just topit the dove.

In '99 I had an act at World Magic Seminar where I vanished a dove in my back pocket. They were those huge pants. Jncos I think they're called. I don't know, I was in middle school anyway. I had a pocket made on the back of the pants. Because of the style of the pants, I was able to get away with hiding the pocket.

It is possible to do a dove vanish to silk using the topit. The dove is in the hypnotic state. That is, lying in the palm of your hand as if you were hypnotizing it, then with a sudden circular toss, you release the silk. Takes some practise, but it is possible and amazing when perfected. I saw this move years ago in Bill Bixby's Wonderful World of Magic Series.

Oh my gosh?
are you sure? throwing a dove, I should say dropping, into a pocket while in a trance sounds like murder! even if the dove wouldn't die, you must ask yourself, is this too much on my birds? DJ |

DJ, the bird is only going to travel a few inches into the topit. It probably gets less abuse than it does in a tip over box or other production/vanish prop.

Actually Fielding West topits his dove into his coat, I've messed around with it, but you need a loose open coat to really make it look cool. Plus, if you do it you should have all your other body loaded pockets empty to eliminate the buldges. As far as a pants pocket tail vanish goes I know a guy, SinGee, who does it. Or he did for awhile anyway.

The box idea is what I started using when I got rid of the tails last year. But, you really have to have something else introduced into the situation. I show the dove, held in my hand, palming a matching white silk against his back (the position that I usually used when doing a toss vanish). As I go back over to my box to get my cap gun, I 'squeeze' the dove into the box, and get the silk into a position similar to the dove's head, and back away from the box, displaying the gun, and holding the dove down on the right side of my body, facing back. The body shields the direct look at the dove, and I toss the silk handkerchief into the air and shoot it with the cap gun.
It really looks good, even on video, due to the pacing, motivation and subtlety. After producing another dove, I can grab the boxed dove and bring him up in a sort of 'mash' position with the visible dove, and do a split that gets real reactions on the level of the reactions that I get with my instantaneous split off of the chest with the invisible. This split even makes the true split more beautiful and effective. |
