I am looking to put together a rope routine with an interesting story. It will be used in adult shows so preferably not a story to childish but at the same time I would like to keep it clean. Perhaps a history lesson on ropes while performing, or some of my effects will include shock magic so even a creepy story would be nice, but truthfully any rope routine with a story anyone may be familiar with would be nice I can adapt it to be my own

Check out Magictales by Leslie Melville, there is a very nice rope routine with an excellent and entertaining story. In fact I think that book is a great illustration of how to add stories to your magic, without the usual corny lines.

Http://www.markleveridgemagic.co.uk/rcp.php ring and rope routine. it looks simple, for magicians, but this one is great for lay audiences. people like a good story and it is magical too. a winner.

Roberto Giobbi's Houdini Rope Trick has kind of a story that goes with it. I'm not sure if it is what you are looking for or not. I haven't seen the Flip DVDs in a long time, but I was thinking maybe some of his rope stuff might work for your purposes.

I have an entire routine called "Necklacy" that I have performed for a Senior Citizen Center.
The story is that every resident has to keep their belongings on a rope loop tied around their neck so that they won't loose them. Objects are removed and used as props interwoven with several C&R effects, LInking Ropes and PN. You can adapt the props to the situation -- including using a toilet paper tube. I'm going to rewrite it some, but the current version is available from eversway.com Some of the effects led to a friendship with MagicIan and a visit to my home to explore some of the methods (Ian Garrison deceased)

I present Professor's Nightmare as a lecture on optical illusions; you can find details here
<http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=106316&forum=9&35>. For a routine with a lot of simple knot effects, I use a story about taking a test for a knot merit badge when I was a Boy Scout. My favorite rope routine uses a series of moves from Tabary, with a story about the problems I had as a child getting knots in my shoelaces. I'd be happy to supply more details on any of these if you're interested. Murf |

I also do Tabary routines and love them. I do professor's nightmare for kids and family shows and once with a bit more comedy.

One thing that I would mention for others is that I think it is a good idea to have different people examine each rope. I learned the PN when I was just a kid. One time I did the trick for some of my friends, and I let them examine the three ropes afterward. They were able to figure out the basic "secret" by playing with the ropes. I learned my lesson that day. As long as the ropes are in different spectator's hands, it seems much less likely they will figure it out. [Then there was the time I showed card warp to a 7 year old girl, and she figured it out on the spot.] I would love to know more details about your other rope routines! Please share whatever you feel comfortable sharing. Thanks! Jay |
