The US major-general, may he rest in peace, they say, is the most senior international soldier killed since the occupation in 2001. Which seems quite surprising, considering what an awful long time now this never ending thing has being going on. Anyway they say the general was killed in an attack by a man in Afghan military uniform at a British-run military academy near Kabul, and the soldier that did it was shot dead. Two British soldiers were among the wounded, along with several Americans, a German general and an Afghan general. The details are here:

That's correct- the last casualty at this level was a three-star general killed in the 9/11 attacks.

Yes. They are saying the two star general is the highest ranking U.S. officer to be killed in combat since 1970.
