Well, hmmm.
Thunder Island, please don't take this wrong, but I think maybe you are "jumping the gun" on doing shows like birthday parties at this point. You are 12, right? I would recommend that you just enjoy learning and performing magic at this point. Magic sets are ok for learning some stuff, but not for doing kid shows! I do a fair amount of kid shows, and nothing I do in them comes from a magic set. It is not easy to do a GOOD kid show. That's why magicians who specialize in doing them are often able to charge a lot of money for those shows. I think the Mark Wilson book is really good. There are other good beginning books as well. Magic for Dummies is good, as are the beginning books by Joshua Jay and Nicholas Einhorn. What I really think you should do is just have fun right now. Get some of those beginner books. Read. Study. Learn the basics of sleight of hand, misdirection, showmanship. You can have a lot of fun right now just doing close-up. If you really want to do stand-up shows, there may be some opportunities in your area for you to do magic to help others without taking paid work from others. You may be able to do shows at hospitals or in nursing homes. Is there a magic club in your area? If so, maybe you can connect with them to give you an outlet for your magic. Again, I hope you won't think I'm trying to discourage you. I'm honestly not. I'd just like to encourage you to be a 12 year old with a fantastic hobby/interest/passion. I think you should just have fun for now! Jay |

Thank you Jayf I've actually been performing at school during break time (I'm in year 8)and was thinking of actually entering the talent show at the end of year which will give me time too learn the tricks from Mark wilsons book of magic
To put together a routine and master it and fond out which tricks would work on everyone to try on my friends and see which one work and that could work on a stage to bring people on stage to do with other people PS: I saw your other post on the other subject: par time/full time |

Are you familiar with Joshua Jay? He wrote his first magic book, Joshua Jay's Magic Atlas, at age 17. So, I certainly wouldn't want to come across as discouraging to you just because you are 12. At the same time, at your age I really think you should not be worrying about performing for money. Instead, I think you should be having fun with magic -- learning, studying, and growing. Who knows? Maybe you'll be ready to write your own book when you are 17! I think your entering the talent show is a great idea. It gives you a goal to shoot for, it will allow you to try a different type of performance, and you will likely be performing for a friendly audience. I honestly wish you the best to luck!!! Jay |
