I don't post on the Café much at all, but I wanted to post this because of something I've discovered recently. I am a full-time mentalist based out of Wichita, KS, and have done a number of spots and interviews on radio and local TV over the years. I did a radio interview this past monday for one of the top stations in town, and as usual had a lot of fun with it. I have a couple of upcoming public shows as well as a new project for veterans I wanted to talk about. The host asked me what kind of "tricks" I was going to do and when I told him he said that for the blindfold effect I was going to perform that he wanted to save that for AFTER the interview. He told me that the station was pushing him to take videos and pictures of things happening in the studio and put them up on their website, Facebook page, etc. He said that this is a huge thing now for radio. I did what he asked and the result was this video which happened after the interview. He's a great guy and his reaction was fantastic. For those who have done radio, are you finding this to be more and more the case? Are you going into radio interviews prepared to do something visual for them that doesn't necessarily have to play strong to the radio but rather to a video camera? I did something else for the actual interview itself, and saved my blindfold stunt for the video. Thoughts?

Thoughts, no. But I did enjoy the performance.
Had I not been aware of the pre-show work that's shown at the end, I would've had no idea on how you guess the name. And I have no clue how you guessed the object (unless the same kinf of work was put into him earlier). P! |

As far as the effect and routining was concerned, I was a bit frustrated that he mentioned the slip of paper, because I had given him my typical pre-show type of spiel--that the writing was to help him remember since he had a lot going on on the radio, that it was proof so that he couldn't change his mind, etc.; all of which he played along with wonderfully and understood completely; so I thought. I could tell he was about to bring it up when he said "Wait a minute..." I think that for the average laymen this isn't really a big deal; I even explained to him how that the slightest thought in the minds of the viewers and listeners that something was pre-arranged and we lose credibility, even though nothing WAS truly pre-arranged. The blindfold stunt was performed cold and involved no pre-show other than telling him that I would blindfold myself with duct tape and try to see some objects through his eyes. This interested him greatly and that's why he preferred to do this on video rather than during the live interview (where I performed a different effect). Overall, his reactions of pure astonishment are completely genuine. My main point of this, however, concerns the increased use of video as a means of promoting radio stations and how that when we as entertainers go in for radio interviews we should perhaps be prepared to do something for video as well as radio. I also brought up this topic in the "Penny For Your Thoughts" thread on this forum as well. I believe it is just a part of the ever-changing face of media and how we use it to promote ourselves.
