We had company over for dinner this week and I took T.U.R.N. for a spin. I thought it would be a good way to test it out in a close-up situation.
I had concerns about "the move" going in but those concerns have been alleviated. I'd anticipated having to wait for the right moment to do the move but I almost found myself having to draw their attention back to the lock when I was done! When close-up with people, they just naturally look at your face and at each other. Everything is more interesting than a rather inconspicuous lock. Of course, I had a scripted motivation for handling the lock after the inspection. That's just good form. So if anyone was worried about "the move" in a close-up situation, don't be. |

I have both the Grismer lock and T.U.R.N. The methods for these effects are entirely different. The T.U.R.N. lock is so well made the accompanying video is well produced and the routine is so well scripted, I will be using it more often. I must also note that, when I contacted Jason Palter with a question about how to perform this effect for a single spectator, he immediately responded with a brilliant routine that I will most certainly use. Just to be clear, while the Grismer lock is a classic and is an effect I enjoy, the T.U.R.N. lock is an entirely new approach and one I am extremely happy with. It also seems to me to be an approach that can generate a number of different routines and presentations. One thing that threw me a little at first is that two sets of numbers on the lock, the 0 and the 3, are raised and stick out above the level of the other numbers. It turns out this has absolutely nothing to do with the effect and, when I checked the Master Lock company's web site, it is in fact the way they make this lock...the raised numbers simply make it easier to turn the reels. This effect is not inexpensive but I believe it is worth the investment.

Looking into this type of effect and its my first attempt at this genre, is this a good place to start or should I go with a more classical version?

Just picked up TURN. Very impressive. I have Supalock but I wanted a good combination lock for a new routine. TURN is perfect for my needs.
My only concern is that the special mechanism doesn't have a tactical detent that I can feel. Rob, could you PM me the mod you made? That might solve the problem.

It's not my invention but the idea is to glue a tiny black bead into the small divot. Makes it easier to locate and manipulate.

I wonder how easily the lock opens, once the special move has been made. Ideally, it would require a bit of force to open it - to help prevent it being accidently opened prematurely. I am wondering if it could open easily (if held by the shackle or if it is not handled gently) before the final digits are put in.
It looks like a fantastic product and one of the best lock tricks I have seen. |
