I randomly decided to dig out my pen through dollar gimmick about 2 months ago -- I know what you're thinking -- just stick with me! This thing has been killing lately and it's worth a discussion.
About 6-7 years ago, I completely discarded it... I thought it was over-exposed online and in stores... and that it's "too easy" (as we magicians often do). But now that I've been seriously using it for a solid 2 months I haven't had a single group that was wise to the gimmick. And it's been very memorable for the groups I've used it with. Does anyone think this might be able to make a return now that it's been a little while? Has anyone else dug this out of their magic drawer lately? I've got a big walkaround show soon and I wanted a gut-check before I incorporated it. |

It is not the pen through dollar, but Peter Nardi's Sharpie Through Card has gotten me great reactions. As long as we give them a card/dollar, and a sharpie/pen to inspect they'll usually not suspect a gimmick.

Check out Cody Fisher's Counterfeit Money. It's the best handling I've seen for this effect.

I'm been meaning to learn 'melt by matthew johnson' ... and I thought that after I make the card melt through the bill... then I make the pen melt through the bill... then I can even do ignition if I want. I'm hoping that the penetration with 3 seemingly normal items will put all the heat on the bill and I can switch things out while they look at the bill.

I recently tried to put Melt into my act. I did it with a coffee shop royalty card instead of a playing card. I really didn't go over well because there was a lot of confusion of what was happening. People didn't remember if it was behind the fold in BETWEEN the fold. Anyway, back on topic I've been looking at object thu dollar affects and a pen does seem the most natural.

I never took pen through dollar out of my strolling bit. It's still a great routine and gets great reactions. I can't believe that everyone focuses on the dollar - the pen never gets questioned. I wear a PK ring when doing this - the gimmick ends up on the ring and is a lot easier to manage.

Even though a "Chris Angel" version showed up at the Dollar Tree along, most folks have never seen this trick. I great great reactions and as it was pointed out; the "heat" seems to always be on the bill, not the pen.

Dig out "mislead"
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.
