Well first the question is this. do you want to start doing stage shows? birthdays? larger show type events.
if so this will give you some experience. the reality is that close up and stage are two different animals and you cant just decide hey I will do a stage show tonight. just like scripting a close up routine you need to script and plan out every trick and movement in your routine not to mention everything you say. now things you must know. larger audience require more visual effects. larger sound system larger space to perform so your prop management will need to be thought out prior to the show. by the way I am not trying to scare you off I am just trying to point out the things that go into a stage show. now in reality for you and this friends event if you are not getting paid or not paid much you have some lee way but you should still be prepared arm twist - if that is the david blaine thing I am not sure that would play well for kids nor a larger audince don't know what hoppin dots is sketch o magic should be fine that's the type of things you can use. other ideas would include (that you might already be familiar with so could learn to perform it stage wise quickly) news paper tear b wave change bag routine rope tie just to name a quick few the key here is that you need to select items that will play to a larger audience and that you can prepare properly before the show date. good luck that's all the time I have right now sam

Are fifth graders 10? If so I would use tricks like hippity hop rabbits, arm chopper, card in lemon, sandz, fiber optics, rising card pad, growing shrinking head, needle through balloon, chop cup or cups and balls, miltiplying bottles, vanishing bandana, mental epic and others like this. 10 and 11 year olds all think they know the trick so sucker tricks work well. They also want to see amazing tricks like rising card or sands. The biggest piece of advice is to do the tricks well and have fun. They will like it if they like you.

Establishing a few control techniques for the audience at the beginning of the show is always key to presenting to this age group. I first read about these techniques years ago in a book called poof your frog. I have no idea if this book is still available however I know it helped me tremendously when I started performing birthday parties.
Good luck Rodney |
