I have the original Tenyo Rainbow Silks T23 in the box with English instructions. I purchased this item new sometime in the mid 1970s. Can anyone tell me how rare it is and what the value might be? I have not seen this Tenyo item for sale anywhere on the net.
I have other Tenyo items I collected many years ago and did not realise how rare and collectable some of them are today. |

A nice item to have, and worth a decent price. Don't sell it cheap!

Does the thumbtip look like a thumb, or is it just a smooth tube with no features?

Just let people know that the Tenyo Rainbow Silks (shown above) does not come with a thumb tip.

I have two versions of Rainbow Silks. One came with a smooth thumbtip (more like a thimble if you ask me) and smaller silks. The other did not come with a thumbtip but came with much larger silks. However I did notice that in this version the green silk did not match the rainbow silk exactly. That is probably the version that you have.

Yes your right. My version is the one that the green silk does not match the green edge of the rainbow silk.
For more information I have attached a copy of the back of the box. Click here to view attached image. |

The funny thing is both of mine have a different back of the box than yours. I have the one shown here:
http://tenyo-magic.blogspot.com/2010/05/t-023.html?m=1 I believe yours in newer. They redid a lot if the descriptions eventually to be more concise and have better English. |

Thank you for the information. You will also notice that the front of my box does not have the words "Means Magic" at the top.
I wonder how many early versions of this trick there are? |

Yes I noticed that as well. I have only seen these 2 versions. Some of these tricks had a third version of the box in which they changed the description to pictures but I have not seen one of those for rainbow silks.

David your box exactly matches both front and back of the trick pictured here but it has the "Thimble" and the silks cannot be "made out" because they are in what looks like the original package. On the same site you can see an article here about the different versions of the boxes used by Tenyo that XL18 refers to above.

Someone who shall rename nameless must be watching. Earlier today when I provided the link to the T-23 on the Tenyo Magic Site there were only pictures of the front and back of the box. Now there is a full write-up with more pictures and a link to a performance video.

Every version of this trick includes some version of a thumbtip otherwise you have no way to vanish the silk.

I don't remember getting a thumb tip with the trick, but that was 40 odd years ago.

A Silk Pull was povided together. I remember I occasionally painted the Pull in my early days at Tenyo.

Kato-san started working at Tenyo in the mid 1960s, when versions of the 20th Century Silks still included a pull. But this was discontinued when the line was reorganized for export in 1969.
It's a simple matter to read the instructions of the exact example of the trick you own and see how the vanish of the silk is accomplished. If a thumbtip or fingertip is indicated, then it was included in the box with the silks. |

My instructions state that you require a set of hankies (as per the contents of the box), one false thumb and a glass. It does not say that a thumb tip was included, only that you require one. I cannot see how a thumb tip could fit in such a small box with the silks. The silks, with instructions and packaging (which I have retained) take up all the box space.
If a thumb tip came with the trick, was it separate to the boxed silks? |

I have not seen one with a pull. That would be nice to find. Although the original thumbtip sort of looks like a pull minus the pull part.
My instructions do say to use a thumbtip but it did not come with one. At first I thought it was just lost. However I have seen a number of these sold on Ebay and other places and many of them did not come with a thumbtip. Even ones that looked brand new. I even double checked with the oweners and they said it did not come with one. There were too many of these to be a coincindence. Perhaps the were phasing out the metal thumbtips and just left them out at some point? I do not know for sure of course, but to me it seems it was left out of some of them. David, when the thumbtip was included it was in the box. It was squished in with the silks and instructions. |

I have a number of versions of this, including the American flag version. All have either the "blank" thumbtip or the molded thumbtip (both made of aluminum painted flesh color on the exterior). It is highly unlikely that Tenyo would sell a trick that required a piece of apparatus without including it. All tricks are self contained as far as the magical "parts" go. Look at Crystal Tube as an example--you get the rubber bands you need.
I'm do not doubt Elliott's word: if he says he's seen too many for it to be a coincidence that it's possible that a batch was accidentally made and shipped without the thumbtips. |
