Greetings to all!! I have been lurking on the forums for the last few days now it's time to get real. My name is Jaye. I run a small performing arts theater that will be screening Rocky Horror this Halloween. In our gallery/lobby space, we are also hosting a Halloween themed carnival. We have a few games set up and a tarot card reader. I am looking for some ABSOLUTE beginner ideas to spice up the carnival. Spooky is a must! The audience will all be 18+ so content isn't really an issue. I have a very modest budget but I am crafty so building props is no issue. I was thinking about a small, curtained off room to hold a seance style skit, but I know there are better ideas out there.
Thanks in advance for your help folks! I LOVE what you do and will spend the next week reading these forums!! |

Hmm, this sounds very similar to something in my area. You're not located in Florida are you? I'd recommend a magician doing Criss Angel type of spooky tricks! i.e. swallowing thread and pulling it out of their eye, creepy levitations, etc.

Thanks for the advice! I am in Northeast Ohio. We were lucky enough to find a few sideshow performers who are willing to come in. I am still reading up on seance performances here in the forums. TONS of good information. I may try to pull one together.

Anything to do with fire is guarenteed to go down well. Flaming goblets that burn through cards, change colour, etc would be very impressive in a Hallowe'en setting. Also, anything to do with mouths and/or eyes (such as the thread trick that Daggers mentioned) is automatically creepy, as they are things that shouldn't really be touched or anything. Transport an object to the mouth (or the eye, such as the Nerds in last year's Magic Block Party with Justin Flom) can be very well pitched.
It all boils down to as much danger as possible, as few cards as possible. While useful in some places, this is not one of them. As always, Nathan |

The trouble is, there's not much for absolute beginners that's ripe for public viewing. Sure, there are tricks easy enough for beginners to do that can still work professionally, but it's all about experience and presentation. It's all well and good to pull a thread out of your eye and if you do it skillfully, it might even fool people. But how do you make it magical? Same goes for anything else. Depending on how small your small budget is, your best bet would probably be to hire a professional, AT LEAST as a consultant to help you put everything together.
If you're hooked on the idea of doing it yourself, then it's certainly possible to make almost any magic fit. The spooky things--demons or spirits or whatever else--are not effects, but a presentational theme. Once you have magic you can do, it's child's play to attribute the magic to the spirits, and if skillfully done, this can provide serious nightmare fuel for some people.

You may want to post this question in "The Cellar" section, particularly "The spooky, the mysterious...the bizarre!" A lot of great thinkers there, and pretty nice too.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
