I am not a magician but, like everyone else, I like magic. What is a non-magician doing here? I have a niece who is 6 years old. I've been buying her litlle magic tricks for awhile now and she loves them. So I am here to find information on what is the best DVD to learn tricks that a 6 year old can learn?
I couldn't find anything specifically directed at that age group. The magic sets in stores target the 5-12 age groups. The differnce between 5 and 12 year olds is tremedous when it comes to performing a trick. So I am looking for something to help her. Anyway, my niece, Mia, loves this stuff. Doing a magic trick that tricks her is fun but, doing a magic trick and sharing the secret is better. An average uncle can become a rock star. I am hoping to find something with everyday items. She doesn't know much about cards so they don't impress her like they would if she did. She also doesn't understand much about money. So charging a dollar to see folding paper trick that changes a dollar into a penny doesn't have the impact it should. Can someone make some recommendations for us. Thank you for taking time to consider my question. I showed her a trick where there is a ball on a pedestal and you make it disappear and reappear in your pocket. (The store that sold it to me said it is one of the oldest tricks in the world but now I have forgotten its name.) She went nuts over that. So something anyone can understand are the best tricks for her as opposed to money and card tricks. On the other hand she is getting older everyday so what is over her head now might not be in 6 months. So maybe the age range should be 6-8 years old. |

I think your best bet is to work with a magic shop. There is a lot of variability is development for that age group - you are right , coins and cards probably aren't good till age 10 or older. Ball and vase (the trick you got for her) is a good example of how a shop can help you.
What city are you in? It helps to develop a relationship with a local shop. If there aren't any local, then there are some you can call that will be able to help you over the phone. All that said, Joshua Jay's, Magic The Complete Course , comes with a DVD and when she is ready, will be a good book to start with. There are some kits out there as well, but I'm not too familiar with them. Hudson |

There's a lot of stuff suitable for performing FOR that age, but I don't know a lot of stuff for that age TO perform in terms of books and DVDs on the market. There are lots of individual tricks along the lines of what you've already described, as well as some magic sets. But as has been said, there's a variety in development at that age. A set for 5-12 years might contain plenty of things that would be good, but probably also plenty that would be rubbish until some years later. I would also suggest, as Hudson did, to find a local magic shop and seek the advice of the people there. If you find a good shop, they'll be able to work with you individually to choose the best items.
If she were about five years older, I'd be giving the same advice, but with the addition of lots of recommendations of specific sources and ideas, but I just don't know much for the age of six years.
