19 years ago today I enlisted in the Army.
13 years ago today I stepped foot into Afghanistan 12 years ago today my best friend, whom I was in Afghanistan with, saw the birth of his son of whom I'm the God parent. 4 years ago today my beautiful little girl was born. 1 year from today I will retire from military service. (At least that's the current plan) Do any of you have a particular day of the year where significant memorable events seem to occur? |

Hi William,
I would say the most signaficant day for me was when I got married on September 30th (I had a courthouse wedding where my wife and I got married in front of a local judge, I like to keep things simple). The second most signaficant day for me would be September 11 because it was responsible for my deployment to Afghanistan. I can't remember the exact day I deployed to Afghanistan but it wouldn't be too hard to look at my last DD-214 to see when (my other DD-214 was a deployment I served in Bosnia). To me, the date of my deployment to Afghanistan was not as important as September 11, but rather the day of the reason why I was deployed to Afghanistan holds more importance. September 11 itself holds more importance to me. Though my deployment was tough and we lost a few guys, but it was simply part of my duties as a soldier who had taken an oath. Putting your life on the line and possibly not making it back home alive comes with the profession of being a soldier. I also take the time to make sure the guys we lost are not forgotten as well. Their names are as follows: Sergent Brock H Chavers who served in my company in Afghanistan, Delta Company, 2-212 Infantry, 48th Infantry Brigade, Georgia Army National Guard. He was killed along with Specialist Issac L. Johnson who also served in my company in an IED strike during a left seat right seat ride. The other two guys killed with them were from a different National Guard unit who we were replacing and were just days away from going home when they were hit. There names is as followed: Specialist Chester Hosford and the other is 2nd Lt. Derwin I Williams. It is important that these two gentlemen from the Illinois National Guard are also remembered and not forgotten. May they always be honored. They died so that others back home here may live. We lost a few others guys in my Brigade but they were not in my company or on the FOB that I served on in Afghanistan like the above named individuals that I named. However, it's important that all lost in these recent wars are always remembered, honored and never forgotten.

Ohh yes, one last thing William, congratulations on your upcoming retirement. It's no easy feat to serve 20 years. At least I don't think it is with all these deployments that were happenning with the recent wars. You should be very proud. Me personally, I enjoyed serving, but I don't think I could make it a 20 year career. I enjoy performing magic and being a business owner too much. Not only that, but I like my freedom too and being a civilian. But putting in a few years with the Guard did me a lot of good and I am glad I did it. I wouldn't want to see combat again, but I am glad I served and put in a few years for my country and can reflect back on my deployment in Afghanistan with pride and know I fought the good fight against the evil terrorists who struck us on 9/11.

Here in the US where I am from, most people don't understand that in other parts of the world, people don't know if they will live to see the next day and they face danger around every corner. Here where I am from, we have it good in comparison to most people around the world.

Since this was supposed to be about significant "reoccurring" dates I will try to steer this back on course. all while keeping it short and sweet. 👼
While mine is not month specific the "13th" is a common theme for birthdays in my family. Seven members of my immediate family and their kids we're all born on the 13th of a particular month. |

Amazing, Scott! And congratulations!
I personally have experienced a few life-changing events, but never paid attention to the specific dates. However, there is one day that will live in infamy, and which changed the entire course of my life: September 11, 2001. |
