I have Katayama's silk video which is in Japanese. The visuals are clear for the explanations but I'm trying to identify / locate his gimmick. Rather than a solid hank ball he uses an elastic fabric pouch. Is this commercially available? If not does he state what it is made of? Thanks for any help.

Years ago (20ish) Andy Dallas sold a cloth hank pull with a ring sewn into the opening. It could be used much like a hank ball-remove elastic first.

Thanks for the reply, interesting information - Katayama's does not have a ring (it appears to be all elastic fabric)but the upper edge with the opening looks as if it has more elastic (to prevent silks coming out prematurely?). The fabric appears tough as he fills it with a number of silks.
Anyone else with info regarding what Katayama says / uses in the video regarding the gimmick? Thanks |

Try Seo Magic in California. I bought a silk effect with a similar type if prop. Ither thing to consider is a small foot sticking that is used when folks are trying on shoes and they don't have socks on. The name of this escapes me at the moment. But it is made of smart material as pantyhoses.

For some reason I have a lot of misspelled words and/or typos in my response. I am fairly certain I checked it. In any case, I was referring to those small nylon footie stockings (they just cover the entire foot) that they give women in shoe stores when they do not have socks or stockings on when they are trying out shoes. It serves like a hank ball although it will hold more since it expands.

Thanks for the replies - from watching the video, I did wonder if he was using a standard retail item that was re-purposed for this, so that's possible (although the ones I've seen online are of a much thinner material than his are), or they could be from something else.

I also wish I knew exactly what he was using in that video. Does anyone else have any idea what this may be. I am sure I could make something out of women stocking material but it would be good to know exactly what he is using. Since I do not speak his language that part is difficult.

Jim you are right, it is a small(baby)stocking. I have seen similar products in shoe shops. They would give you a pair to wear on your socks if you want to try shoes in the shop.

It sounds a lot like something Duane Laflin talks about in his videos Sensational Silk magic and Simply Beautiful Silk Magic

Yes I have Duane's videos and that is why I initialy thought it was the samy thing. Since I have posted I have actually bought some womens knee high leggings and cut just the top 3 or 4 inches off and hemmed. Works very nice and I am now able to up my silk size from 9 or 12 inch up to 18 inch silks for a couple particular effects I am doing. Very cool stuff! Still love my hank ball but this let me do some extra stuff with my silk magic!

Katayama (father) is the owner of UGM in Japan, some of their products are sold through Stevens Magic. I would only guess, this trick is with his son, who, it was announced in he last Stevens email, will be appearing in the FISM contest this year.
I would also guess this trick or DVD and the original Poster, is from Japan, as Stevens Magic is only selling UGM's DVDs of the highlights of their yearly convention in Japan. |
