Hello there,
I'm really pleased to finally post on the board after having refreshed my inbox for the last twenty minutes waiting for the password. I came here to learn from you guys. I never had an interest for magic until recently when I decided it would be cool to have good sleight of hand. So I'm more interested in learning sleight of hand than routines, which I guess are the easy part once you've mastered the sleight. Any advice would be more than welcome, yesterday I got myself Sachs sleight of hand book and got as far as the first page where he shows the classic palm. Since I've been practicing non stop, walking with the coin palmed, and even typing this message with it palmed. I've learned in other areas in life that its best to start somewhere, master one thing, then move on. Hope the Café will be able to assist me on my road to learning sleight of hand. Sam Disastroso |

Welcome Sam Disastroso,
Routining is way harder than you think and a very important part of the art but the sleight is super important as well. Not all Magic uses sleights but if you do use them they need to be well done. Don't practice too much in one go or you could give yourself carpal tunnel or other hand issues and not be able to practice for several days. Never try and push through the pain, it is counterproductive and possibly damaging. Things may feel uncomfortable and awkward (that is normal) but once they start to hurt, STOP. A little fairly often works well for me. Because of this, I'm usually working on about three things and cycling between them but I stay with those three things for quite a while. Have fun and remember it is NOT all about the sleights. Entertainment is paramount. There are many layers to achieving Entertainment but it is a great and enjoyable adventure. Have Fun and keep a dated record of your works in progress. It is fun and informative to look back on your journey. -Mary Mowder |

Welcome Sam! I'm glad you have decided to start on the basics - and Sachs is a great resource.
I will echo Mary's comments. Work on a few of the basic slights, palming is one (actually there are many different palms), perhaps three as Mary has suggested. Spend maybe 10 minutes a day on each. Then work on a routine that these slights are required for (perhaps you may want to select the routine first ...) then you will continue to build your slight skills as your work the routine. The most important thing to remember is that you are successful if the audience enjoyed your show. Not necessarily if they were fooled. Also, see if you can find a local magic club you can join. There is no substitute for live interaction with other magicians. Hudson |

Thanks for the kind welcome.
So you suggest several at a time? I guess I didn't make this so clear, for now I'm not reallu interested in performing magic. I just wanna get good with my hands for now. My older brother performed card magic quite extensively a few years back, and I would like to know how to make things dissapear for myself, and also eventually cool card moves like the different shuffling methods, double lifting and what not. I ordered a pack of cards because I didn't have one, should receive it tomorow (gotta love amazon prime). What do you guys suggest I start with? My classic palm is getting better but os still relatively slow, I've practiced for 6 hours yesterday and today. Is that too much? Thanks again. |

For me, Magic is a performance art.
I can make no suggestion if you have no plan to perform. Pursue what you love doing. You must follow your own path If it is not hurting you it seems OK. -Mary |

What sort of "tobacco" are you smoking? (referring to your avatar)
Reading your posts, it appears to me that you have only a selfish motive for learning sleight of hand technique. Magic is a PERFORMING ART. In modern times, magic is a vehicle for entertaining people, but, magic is not inherently entertaining! A magician uses sleight of hand, AND OTHER TECHINIQUES, as "tools" to perform a trick. His personallity and his presentation are extremely critical to his success in entertaining. With your attitude, as expressed in your posts, (self gratification) I'm betting that you'll soon tire of the hours of practice necessary to achieve any level of ability. Perhaps, I have misinterpreted what you nave said. I am willing to be convinced otherwise. Until I am, I will withhold judgment.

P.S. I checked your "profile".
The French call sleight of hand, "PRESTIDIGITATION". --sometimes its: "LEGERDEMAIN"

No you haven't misinterpreted what I've said Dick. And that's ok, I respect your opinion, maybe you're right. Maybe I'll transition towards performing, maybe I'll give up. We will just have to see, as long as I'm enjoying myself right?
Concerning Tobacco, my go to cigars are Hoyo Epicure Especial. I just realised I didn't give any background about myself, now might be the time to do so. I'm an english and french citizen, and am studying business in Montreal right now (Hence the ability to smoke cuban cigars) Which alsoo leads me to your remark on my signature. It's meant to be funny, in the sense that you sometimes hear people saying " Sleight of hand, or as the french say Legerdemain". One might regard such remarks as slightly pretentious, trying to prove they know two languages. Therefore some might find it funny, or entertaining to hear or read: as the french would say ze sley of ande, which would be sleight of Hand said with a french accent. If it offends anyone I'd be more than happy to bring it down? Back to the real subject of interest. Thanks Mary fir suggesting to keep a log of my progress, I think that's a good idea. Would this topic be conveniant to do so? If not should I start a log in an other section of the forum? So I've continued practicing my classic palm, which is getting better everyday, and I received a pack of cards earlier in the post. I'm practicing the riffle shuffle, although I'm really struggling in getting the whole "riffling' right. |
