Rhode Island holds its own Comic Con each year. This is the third year. When I get my desktop back up, I'll post some pictures including one of me leaning in a TARDIS.
My favorite moment was when I'd caught up to my kid who'd wanted to go to a panel on "Art in Toys." Whereas my other son and I went to see a panel on "Masked Crime Fighters on Television" which had Deathlok (from S.H.E.I.L.D.) the original Captain America from the 70's, Captain Marvel from the 80's and the original Flash (who is currently playing the FATHER of the current Flash) Spawn showed up after awhile and William Katt ("Greatest American Hero") had to cancel because his time was short and he wanted to spend it at the table meeting his fans directly. After that panel I caught up to my kid and the people hosting his panel (a pod cast called "Geeks") were giving away t-shirts based on trivia questions. The last one was; "What is Bruce Banner's middle name?" People were shouting out "Robert" and "David" and I spoke up and said; "Trick question; 'Bruce' IS his middle name!" (For those of you not in the know, Stan Lee originally called him "Bob" Banner but messed up on the second issued and changed his name to "Bruce," when called out on it, he said Banner's full name was "Robert Bruce Banner." - The TV show went with David Bruce Banner) So I got a t-shirt out of the day as well as some other bits and pieces. My wife doesn't like the Comic Con so much because it's so commercial. If you pay more than the others, you get preferential treatment and any interaction with the stars is going to cost you. (Most of the stars were charging $10 for an autograph and $20 for a direct photo op - the "Star Trek" crew (Shatner, Koenig, Takai and Nichols) were charging $50 for an autograph/photo op combo!) The only thing I paid money on was when I saw Vic Mignogna, a voice actor my wife is particularly fond of and was very disappointed that she wasn't going to get to meet (raining and cold and she didn't feel up to the crowds) so I bought the DVD of his concert (he also writes and produces his own music CDs which are very similar in style to Barry Manilow and in the concerts he does anime themes as well) I mentioned that my wife and daughters weren't able to make this con and could he send them a message and THAT cost me $10! (I'd like to point out that Vic is a fan as well as a pro and in "looser" run cons has been known to not charge for autographs and or photo ops. Knowing this, while the other stars had little signs on their tables stating their rates, Vic had a handler making certain the monies got charged and collected. So he made a little message that he was sorry they couldn't be here and he'd missed them and they'd better arrange to be at the next con or he'd come FIND THEM! The sound wasn't very good, (I was using an I-pod to record with) but the sentiment was there and my wife was happy with the message and the DVD. We did lunch early on Saturday and it was a good thing because at 2:00, the fire marshall decided that it was too crowded and refused admission to anyone outside the actual con site, whether they had passes or not! (The con people will probably catch a bit of flack for that!)

Actually, No, the Captain America from the 1970s was Not the original one on film. The first one on film was the Captain America from the Republic film of the 1940s. Other than that, I appreciated your Comicon report. Enjoyable reading.

I remember when the San Diego comic con was still relatively small, at least by today's standards. There were some great deals to be had on original artwork. I bought stacks of Dan Decarlo Archie original cover artwork for $20 each, cover and splash page original art from 1970's DC horror comics, Plasticman, and an original metal printers plate for a pair of Bob Kane Batman stories, among other items. And some of the old time legends like Bob Kane, Ramona Fradon, Al Feldstein and Don Martin came and spoke. The one thing I remember from the Q&A with Bob Kane was when someone asked him how he felt about the decision to cast Michael Keaton in the first Batman film, which had just been released. Kane was typically direct, saying "I greatly admire Michael Keaton. He's a fine actor. But I always envisioned Batman and Bruce Wayne as tall, muscular and square-jawed. And Michael, God bless him, is none of those things."
Now it seems to have morphed into a giant ad for the video game and movie industry, with much less emphasis on the comics.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Actually it's reciprocal because while it's successful in the movies, it's reciprocally the movies which also help keep the comics alive. Great reciprocation.

My wife dislikes the ComicCon franchise because of it's heavy emphasis on charging for anything above and beyond sitting the room. (i.e., photo ops, autographs, etc.) She prefers Anime Boston which she believes is more "fan oriented;"
