I believe the routine is in Dai Vernon Book of Magic, page 197.
http://www.llpub.com/catalog/product_inf......s_id=139 Dallas, TX magician Johnny Brown, has a comedy routine in his book "Isn't That Good!" written by Father Brandy on page 51. Bill |

I saw Aldo Colombini do his routine and I think it was great.

Aldo's is called "Cone-tact" and closes with balls from mouth. Its the basic Vernon routine. I have an artist who fashions the most exquisite cones. Custom or his design. Any size. Let me know if you are interested. Also Torkova, the NYC magician is the very best I have seen with this. Absolutely entertaining!

Frank,
I had acquired an old P&L ball and cone set several years ago and Vernon's routine was included, but difficult to follow. I extracted it and set it up in a form that made it easier for me to learn. I did it in Microsoft Word and if you can use that and would like, I'll be happy to e-mail it to you. To learn Vernon's handling I used the Dai Vernon's Revelations. It's on tape 9&10. To me, using that tape to learn Vernon's handling and the nuances of it was essential. You'll get more of an insight as to the details. Earlier on I had downloaded a video clip of Torkova's routine. I believe it was on his website as I believe he also sells the set and his routine which is very nice and has a great final load that Vernon didn't use. If that clip is no longer on Torkova's site let me know and perhaps I can e-mail that too. I also got Columbini's Cone-tact several months ago and he has a nice routine which he has set to music. The balls from mouth closing doesn't particulary hit my happy button, but it works for him. I had asked Michael Ammar if Vernon used any patter, and he replied that he didn't remember any. Vernon seems to take pretty much the credit for the balls and cone for himself. He probably developed it as we see it now, but if you've seen Ammar's Complete Cups and Balls tapes where Bob Read talks about the "little hats" on the magicians tables in his collection of paintings, it makes you wonder if there wasn't a cone routine going on then. Don't think I've gotten so long winded on the Forum. Dwight |

Harry Riser has GREAT routine that also uses the Morrison ball and vase, but can be used without it as well. The basic sleight is the same as Vernon's, but he has a few nice variations. Denny and Lee carry an excellent cone-I bought one there a couple of years ago -to fit Fakini golf balls.

Thanks for the kind words, bunkyhenry - much appreciated. I no longer sell my cone & ball routine although a DVD of it might happen sometime down the line. The clip of me doing it was on the Allmagic guide site while I was selling it.
And yes, if you want a great cone, contact bunkyhenry. They are excellent! Best regards, Torkova |

I've been contracted by Aldo Colombini to start creating the leather cones for his Cone-Tact routine.
He uses 1.5 inch balls which are smaller than that of the Vernon routine. I'll be making a lot of cones so this should also keep the price reasonable for the odd sized cones as well. They will be in various colors. Frank http://www.theambitiouscard.com/

Frank,
Is this for Aldo only? Or will cones be available directly from you? I'm hoping to learn Vernon's routine and "teach" it to my (pseudo) student in a Ren Faire setting and I'll need two cones, one larger than the other. PM me if you like on specifics. Please keep us posted!

No. I'm making cones for anyone. He's just working with me for specific cones for his routine.
Let me know what you're after. My cone prices are $30. I'll be posting cone images on my site very soon. If you need something immediately, PM or email me. Frank http://www.theambitiouscard.com/

Frank,
I see your cups do not have a ledge so the cups can be stacked like most Cups and Balls. So the cups look the same stacked with a ball between them or not. Can you add this to the leather cups? |

Wmhegbli,
I would assume that adding a ledge would greatly increase the price (and complexity) of his cups. It's probably why he really doesn't sell them in a three cup set (yet) It's one of those props where we magicians have to think "outside the box" and come up with a routine that's visually appropriate to the leather cups, and different than the "usual" stuff we do. You can do a whole Cups and Balls routine without stacking the cups at all. Just have the balls (or whatever, a riverboat gambling theme with dice would look great with this) vanish and reappear under the cups as in a chop cup style routine. Come on guys! Have we forgotten how to think for ourselves? I'm having more fun than ever trying to do things *differently* than all the rest.

The cups have a natural 1" attic without the ledge (bead) so that is good.
But, due to the nature of leather, the typical Charlie Miller move using 2 cups is not possible without a ledge because the cups tend to stick together a bit. The bead would help solve that problem. Actually, 2 things need to be considered. Adding the bead (ledge) and also providing a "divot" at the top of the cup to hold a ball. The chop cup version does not have that feature at this time. So, yes, I'm already in the design phase of the 3-cup version. So, work in progress... Frank P.S. Plus they smell better than the brass or copper cups.

The Dai Vernon routine is outstanding and it does not surprise me that nothing new has appeared after all these years. Learn it from the Professor!
