Color monte is the most common.
Also I think I remember Garrett Thomas having version using regular cards on one of his DVDs.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

I This That & Other.
Verbiage changed, more informal too, though along the same lines. Handling for final reveal changed as I do it standing. Sometimes use regular cards as well. |

I have used a variety of themes for this effect, as it always seems to be very well received. I favor taking the cards from a "regular" deck- I will generally have a deck with at least 5 packet tricks hidden in it.
Just let your imagination loose. The variations are many. Currently, I am using the Queen of hearts, King of diamonds and Jack of clubs. Patter relates to "some people spend there life trying to join the Fame club (club), others strive for Riches (diamond) but those who are really happy choose Love (heart)...
Also known, when doing rope magic, as "Cordini"

I favor hand-made cards that match the "guy came up to me on the street" patter. I not completely satisfied with the punch line -- seems best suited for a mature, thoughtful crowd. You also have to slow the pace so people can read and follow the cards. But it has a fun Who's-on-First dynamic. For greater punch with everybody, I like the Color Monte version because the story engages people and the kicker is a bigger surprise.

I took three blank cards and wrote "something", "nothing" and "something else ..." on them. I take them out whenever someone asks me to show them something. Most of the patter is then around how the first card has something on it, whereas the second card has something on it as well, but it's something too/two and the third card has nothing on it although it has something on it but that is nothing, or more like that it has nothing written on it although it something written on it ...: You get the idea.

I perform 'Color Monte' with UNO cards.
I'm not sure if UNO cards are available in other parts of the world - but they are everywhere in Australia. For the money card, I use the Wild card - "which can be what ever card you want it to be!" If you know UNO - then this makes sense...hopefully. |

Nice idea's think I would like to try out the something, nothing, something else one.
Tried to work out a Dutch version for this that and other but the translation doesn't work as good as in English. In Dutch you have words for this card and that card but they are different form the words you would use in the sentence a little bit of this and a little bit of that :-(. |

As in the previous post. I am looking to work this out.
For my student I preform with ace of hearts, the ace of spades and telling the story with finding the ace of spades. Then I do the trick while telling the story and end with that is stood for joker(which is an expression in my language not sure if also so in English). This also allows me to warn them for games like this later on. As stated above this, that other wont work since it translated differently in my language. Then I read about the something, nothing something else one. Which would work well and also employs a play of words. And added bonus in my language something is iets and nothing is niets only one letter difference. But that would be mostly using KarstenMeyerhoff his idea. I still liked the use of words something and nothing so I looked a bit further and came up with this: I am looking for advice on the text, and also to know if I am making it a bit to serious. This is a story about life. Which starts with birth, then we carry on with living and ends with death. (show back of three cards while reversing the order) Most people in their life are on a trip, looking, searching but in the beginning most find nothing even when looking further they still find nothing but eventually everybody finds something worthwhile something to hold on to.(showing nothing twice and something once) But as life goes on trough time, habit, sometimes doubt people lose track of what is important and they are stuck again with nothing(move something to bottom which then is show to be nothing). Having tasted worthwhile thing most people go look for that something again while trying to avoid nothing. But allas they finding nothing. And even when al option are ruled out they still find nothing, the something seems to be lost forever. That's when despair hits and all they see around them is nothing. But have faith there is always something to find(show something on bottom). And once people found it again, they wont let go any more and they even start to find something in other places. Even where there was nothing before.(this shows two times) And now they seem to find something everywhere. Count three cards again just backs. But the problem with most people having faced nothing and finally finding something, they are just not happy and they still keep looking for more? or something else? |

I love the sound of that. Yes, it's serious, but there are occasions when a serious tone is appropriate. It's the kind of trick you can carry in your pocket to use or not as you sense the mood of the situation.

I would recommend changing the "This n' That" to different words, because if you google "this n' that magic trick" there are a bunch of Youtube tutorials for it, which would be bad if anyone chose to do that. If you make it something else it would be harder to google.
