A friend of mine told me that Shawn Farquhar presented the Super Walking Knot using an assistant and a stop light. He did this with music and a silent act. This was a few years ago. Can anyone describe how he presented this? What kind of music did he use? Thanks.

Hi there,
I believe your friend is mistaken. I do Pavel's walking knot to music but, without a spectator or a stop light. The effect is quite brilliant and I was lucky enough to find a piece of music that works very well to enhance the routine. I have been doing the effect for a long time but I don't recall ever doing it the way you are describing...that's not say that I didn't. I experiment a lot! Shawn is so amazing he doesn't even know how amazing he is. Hey Shawn any suggestions on how to make the knot look like it should? Also, how do you cut the rope? Do you actually use scissors or?

I should probably read them more carefully. I only had a quick look at them and on first read didn't find them long on detail but of course, I could just be short on memory. lol

The description of the Pavel instructions are not in detail. I sugest you use a videocamera and play a little with the trick.

I think it is sooooooo important you use sissors in this effect.
I had a friend that used to cut the rope with a karate chop and it killed thetrick because people thought that the rope must be gimicked in some way. The beaty of it is that it is so magical, if you try and cut it magically I don't think it works to me it's overkill. I'm sure someone at sometime will show me a vrsion without sissors and I will change my tune but hey. Kind regards Paul |

Shawn - I saw you do this in Columbus at the Magi-fest (a year or two ago) and was very impressed by your presentation. I've never like the trick so much as when I saw you do it.
Did you make your rope or did Pavel? I ordered one from a website which I thought was a Pavel, and I recieved a chintzy, stiff, little rope with poorly painted gimmicks. As I recall your rope was quite thick and appeared to be of a very high quality. I'd like to work on a routine (using sissors for sure) but I won't do it with crap rope! Your help appreaciated. (I enjoyed all your magic by the way, you were the standout of that convention for me, Shawn) |

I don't think you would have recieved pavel's walking knot.
All of pavel's stuff is very well made and although his stuff isn't cheap you certainly get quality. His gimmicks are ALL top notch and painstakingly made by his lovely wife. |

Hi Folks,
I didn't realize this thread was still alive. Bsears, thanks for the kind words about my performance at MagiFest. I had a blast and hope to appear there again. My rope is made by Pavel and I bought it at Perfect Magic shop in Montreal, Canada. The second one I bought I got from Craig Dickson at FFFF. Both are a fairly heavy rope, painted gimmicks, and fairly stiff when first bought. After months of practice they ease up a lot. I don't use a pair of sissors, I use a knife only because it plays better for a big house. I also almost cut the rope with the sissors, even though I dulled them down considerably. The handling of the knot I use is much different than Pavel's. I could not make sense out of the instructions so I asked Greg Frewin and Rob Wong to each show me their handlings and then created my own. I think if you apply the time and energy the handling can look very natural and less tricky than the one Pavel suggests...yes after years of doing the effect I did see Pavel's handling and felt it was a little tricky looking. Hope all of this answers your questions ... Shawn "out to sea" Farquhar Did you all know I am hosting a magic convention on a cruise ship? Check out my website for details! |
