Regarding lost secrets:
If you are now aware of the loss to the comunity through the loss of knowledge not written down, then it is up to you...YOU...to kindly regard future historians (and tomorrow's performers) by writing down YOUR experiences, secrets, methods and approaches. As you rise to the top (should you do so) do not get greedy and selfish and self protective...write it down. Your work lives after you IF your work lives after you. Write it down. And even if you do not wish to release your effects and methodologies during your career or lifetime...give it all as a last parting gift to your brothers to come. Write it down. This means YOU. Begin your journals and notebooks now, if you havent already. And about how to distill too much information? May I quote myself on this topic? "Excuse me if I babble too much: I'd rather say too much than too little. Just tear out the pages you don't like." Let them decide what is too much. Babble on! This world is a-changing fast, and we real-performers may be on our last legs. Virtual performaers may be the next real thng.... Historians will not know us if we do not write it down. Write it down. You. Start now. Sorry to intrude, but this is a hot-button for me. Best-
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.

Tom,
My buddy, I was wondering when you were going to wander into this section... Thank you for your thoughts, too true every word!! Something I like to do is record in a journal, anything that I see someone on stage do, I then try to figure out their method or come up with my own. THIS information I usually do not share as I do not use any of it and if I stumble upon how they do it, I could be in a little trouble. So when I myself pass there will be journals filled with information for the future. Shawn PS, I have the parts for your Cable Cuffs I just have to wait for the weather to warm so I can paint them.

Shawn, warm in your area only leaves about a two week window, better buy the paint ahead of time so it will be warmed up too.

I have found a small tape recorder one of the best investments for documenting informaiton, while riding in the car recording information is easy and there is no time wasted.

Riley,
Have you ever considered writing a book about David's lost secrets? It would appear that you have knowledge of quite a few of them and it would certainly be a real shame to see them end with you. Not only would I personally enjoy purchasing a copy but if David did truly have a great deal more to offer (and from what you say he certainly seemed to) then this would give him even more professional clout after his untimely passing. Plus, I assume that much of his secrets remained as such because he was still using them so at this point they are of no use to any. Just a friendly question and my general 2 cents. -Matt (TK) PS- Santini could you PM me or email me through my site (www.MattTheKnife.com). I had a few questions for you but your email account through your website doesn't seem to be working at present. |

David had a lot of really funny tales, and we had intended to write them up with some cartoon type illustrations -- some for the general public, and some for "the trade". My own book "Break Out" (nearly ready . . honestly!) contains material which David left out of his own book. "Put in in your own book when I'm gone" he said. He also had material that he didn't want to publish, ever, so that must remain in my note books. Still plenty left, though Regards Riley |

Riley,
That all sounds very exciting! I really look forward to reading it. I like the idea of mixing anecdotes with actual trade material as well. I find that it makes for good reading. I know exactly what you mean about your book being almost ready. I've been working on three different books off and on for around 3 years now. Soon I hope to finish one... but I'm not holding my breath. Just this past Saturday I did a show and a gentleman came up to me after and asked about it. It seems that I had mentioned it at a lecture that I had given 2 years earlier and he wanted to know where it could be purchased. It seems like the word "soon" is rapidly becoming my author catch-phrase. -Matt (TK) |

Riley is correct, you would experience a different angle with David if you experienced him on a one to one basis.
I had that priv and armed with a lot of his knowledge (Not put into book form)I have been able to make a fairly good living for a hell of a lot of years. I have note books, letters, even sketches on the back of cig packs which have enabled me some success in this biz. I have worked with and against David on many of the top Showgrounds here in the UK (Believe me this type of show is far more demanding than anything on offer in the US) You have to have done it to experience it. I did the write up for several of Davids sales in the weekly Abra Mag, I have looked back on these and see that my statement "" If you read between the lines you will find the true secrets"" This should sum up the value of a man now passed. The products, now produced under his banner are an insult to the man and any self respecting ea. We have seen it all before>>>>> Ken Brooke is still being used as a name in order to sell copy products which are inferior to his originals,,,The US dealers are the worse, they pay no fee or commission to Barbi and never will. Ken died a very ,very poor man, he was a master, yes even higher than Vernon in my view who left his mark with everything he did but had nothing to show for his labours, much like the Deval farce which is ongoing today. To know was an experience, to tear appart is negative to say the least. Ken. Good luck with the book Riley. Mums the word !!! |

I am glad that some of us did drop a few gems into "Escapism," "The Escapist Newsletter" and other periodicals.
My first introduction to Steve Santini was through the gems he offered in "The Escapist Newsletter"; very practical and eye-opening material. Steve

Nice comments (and very true comments) from Kondini regarding the late Ken Brooke and David DeVal. To know these two gentlemen was a real pleasure, and to learn from them was a real PRIVILEGE. At the time, nobody would consider what Ken or David may have kept to themselves, because that was theirprivilege. We were just grateful for what they gave - gem after gem for the performer! No great financial rewards, either - just delighted students, and delighted audiences! What more can we ask?
My book will be available from Cannons Great Escapes "soon" Riley |

I'll be doing that, Don. Also I promised it to Martin Breese, UK dealer and publisher some time back. Top Secret Magic may stock it too.
One or two guys will receive a complimentary copy. They know who they are Riley |
