Can you help me please.
Chemical effect are often very weird or bizarre effects, and I know that kymistical items are good ones. But do you know good books which provide us with interesting chemical effects ? In fact I heard about Jim Magus' "Horror Magic", but I don't know more about this guy and this book. So there is 2 question : * have you read good literature on chemical magic ? * does Jim Magus books are interesting ?(especially Horror Magic) Thank you

Find "The Shadow Network" and talk to Larry White... (just look into the archieves and follow his threads... more material than you can imagine!)
Now I can't give particulars just yet, but there is rumor of an east coast Mentalist & Macabre gathering in early/mid October... I know that Larry is one of the people being considered for a lecture... just in case you want to set aside the time to join in. Don't ask me for details... the producers of this event will make a very loud announcement sometime in the next week or so, as I understand it.

The is a great book named 'Modern Chemical Magic' written by John D. Lippy Jr. & Edward L. Palder. It has about 150 ideas in it. You will find everything to do with chemical magic: like making luminous paints, invisible inks, daub, dry ice, coloured liquids, ghostly apparitions, many fire effects, smoke effects, flash paper/powder, and many more.
I acquired a few of the chemicals from a chemist friend (science teacher) and he said that some of the chemical names have been changed and updated. I think the book was written in the early 1900s, so it isn't that 'modern'. I'm sure many magic shops still carry it.

Greetings,
First, Be Careful. Second, Be Careful. Third, ask yourself if there is a another way to achieve your effect. Chemical magic is non-trivial, risky, and not as reliable as one might think. To be truly reliable and safe, you need to really understand the chemistry. So if there is another route to your effect, take it! That said, Jim Magus has some fine books out there. Horror Magic doesn't have much in the way of chemical magic though. As I understand it, that one has been republished repeatedly without his blessing. Botwinik's Macabre Chemical Magic has some basic, relatively safe work in it. The Lippy book has been mentioned. It contains some slightly outdated principles that have safer modern counterparts. Avoid the chemical bits in the Invocation. There is a manuscript called "45 Fire Effects" that is okay and ranks the safety of its magic. It appears on EBay with some regularity. And if you do run into Larry White at ICBM, ask him to get to work on that book of chemical magic and publish it anonymously. (And say Hi to me too.) Sam Haine

You are perfectly right !
I know chemicals are often risky ! And I saw many magician who used them as if they were safe ... NH3 + HCl is probably a chemical reaction everybody knows in magic !... But Both NH3 and HCl are unsafe products. Nevertheless many magician admit this products can't harm a spectator !... They probably play with fire. But some simple physical or chemical reactions are safe and can have interesting uses in magic (invisible ink for example). But we can't know all this physical or chemical reactions (that's why so many magicians discover this principles again and again and believe they are the firts to use them in magic). I'm very careful of my spectators safe.

There's a trick known as hypno heat that uses a chemical.
Hypno Heat (Sold to professional entertainers only as this uses a chemical that can be dangerous) Performer rolls a small piece of tinfoil into a ball and hands to a spectator. He hypnotises the spectator telling him the ball will become so hot it cannot be held. Spectator feels the heat and drops the foil. $10.00 For $ 10 you get the chemical I believe. But this is actually toxic stuff, when it gets in contact with your skin it gets into your blood. You can also buy a special hypno heat pen. I saw it somewhere but I forgot where exactly. |

I know that it's a very toxic stuff.
That's why I don't use it. Moreover a lot of people won't understand why you use a small piec of tinfoil. But than you for your help ! And if you like "heat" effect, you can do your own which use an exothermic reaction in a secure metal box. I probably can't give you more informations in a public forum but I give you an adress : http://www.vikingmagic.com/cgi-bin/dc.pl......options= Darmoe ! Thank you too, but I can't find a good way to join the Sahdow Network e-zine ! Can you give me an adress please (in Private mail if you want).

Regarding Hypno Heat there is a similar trick on the Magic and Illusion page that uses a gum wrapper to acheive the same effect without dangerous chemicals.
If you are interested you can find it here http://magic.about.com/library/tricks/bltrick39a.htm I have not used it but some others I have talked to have and said it works pretty good.
