Hey all, I´m a beginner magician and I'm interested in building strong knowledge of card magic so I´ve been planning on buying these DVDs:

Instead of getting the first volumes, why don't you get the whole set?

Maybe because I´m just starting so perhaps it´s better to know the basics and then just move up to the next volumes...It's also a matter of money.

Don't worry about not getting the whole sets. You wouldn't be able to master all of that material at once anyway. It's good that you're starting with three complementary DVDs. In my opinion you are on the right track.
Consider getting books too. The Royal Road to Card Magic is about 10 bucks. Even if you learn mainly from the DVDs, this book will keep you grounded in the basics, and you can refer to some things in it as you learn. |

You should also get the book Mark Wilson's Complete course in magic. It covers such a large variety of topics in one book that it is a must have.

Personally, I wouldn't start with the daryl series.
He goes a little bit fast for me... I would get the DVD's after you build a little foundation. I second the mark wilson dvd's and the royal road to card magic book |

Zenith_023,
if you really want to build a strong KNOWLEDGE, books a much better deal. If you have the money, I'd highly recommend Card College by Roberto Giobbi. There are 5 Volumes, but to build solid a foundation in card magic Vol. 1 to 4 will do. Royal Road to Card magic is also a good solid basis for building your knowledge. Videos like the Daryl series are OK as companions, so you can see how certain things are supposed to look like. With the books above, you'll not only learn how to do card magic, you'll also learn WHY the magic works, what makes a good trick and how to present your magic effectively. |

I think Born to Perform sounds like a good visual learning opportunity to pick up some basics; I haven't seen it though. I agree with everyone else regarding the benefits of obtaining Royal Road to Card Magic. It's a great book, and you'll find yourself going back to it over and over. If you do a search here, then you'll find some of the favorite effects in that book.
I would avoid Daryl's Encyclopedia as a starting DVD series. The Encyclopedia is great for later in your skill development, when you're buying books with more advanced effects that mention sleights, but that don't explain them. I haven't used my set very often but when I do, it useful like a dictionary. Good thinking about considering the ETMCM series. I've found that it's better to be inspired by an effect to learn the sleights, than learn the sleights and try to find an effect. Ammar covers many of the classics and it's a great place to start and hang out for quite a while Finally, I would recommend Double Take by Greg Wilson. Your double lift is one of your most important sleights, and even though it "seems easy", you'll learn that it is more of an advanced move as you need to nail it cleanly and confidently every time. Double Take is a video, but it offers the best instruction on multiple forms of doing a double lift. There are also some effects included and Greg Wilson instructs very well. |

I'd agree with Mark Wilson's book followed by Card College and then delve into ETMCM.

I agree that books will probably help you out more in the long run. Card College is a great choice, as is Royal Road to Card Magic. DVDs can certainly be useful (you can actually see the sleight or effect), but I feel that they don't take the place of books. Use a DVD to complement your study from a book.
Uli hit it right on the head; good books go deeper than the mechanics.

Thank you all very much... I could tell that I know some basics and maybe some sleights but I still feel that I have a long run to go. The main problem I´m having is that I´m from Venezuela and as you could tell, it´s hard to find magic materials.. our currency is plunging down so it gets very expensive to buy either a book or a dvd, but after all I think you guys are right, books might be better... I know some professional magicians here in Venezuela that might be able to order them through the internet although its a little bit tricky since we have a currency control here ( I don't know if I said it right), so we cannot buy any dollars or foreign currency... anyhow.. ill stick to what the experts say... I´ll do my best to find the books.. thanks you all

Buy Books! DVD's have there good points also- but reading more has it's advantages! Roberto Giobbi's Card College five volume set is by far one of the best sets on card magic and presentation ever!
The Tarbell books are also a classic- old English, but still worth getting for 'anywhere/general' magic. They have many good classic card routines in there too. Keep the ambition going! Need help- don't be afraid to ask. PM me if you need anything else. Matt

I prefer card college to RRTCM as it is easier to understand. But it's a little more expensive.....
