Has anyone done any magic performing on the streets in Japan?
In my research I can't many accounts of buskers, and none of magi buskers. Some things say it's the best and most lucrative in the world, and others state that you're either accosted by the yakuza or the police. Any first hand account would be awesome. |

Wow. I'm going to follow this thread. For awhile, I was working on a story that involved a guy stranded in Japan who spends a year busking to earn enough money to get home. My research indicated that busking is frowned on by Japanese officials, the best place IMHO would be in the tourist areas.

Just go and find out for yourself! wouldn't that be the best way to get an answer?

I hear those yakuza guys really dig it if you bring along a guitar and sing a few Simon and Garfunkel songs.
Great way to get free tattoos.

Its my understanding(not sure if its so) that Japanese don't have a custom to tip at all.Even when they visit America they just don't tip.

Interesting question. I haven't lived in Japan for 13 years, so I'm not sure how much anything has changed regarding this. Back then all of the buskers I saw were either jugglers (those giant yo-yos were all the rage) or muscians (playing mostly Green Day or Rockabilly). Never saw a single magi. I think it would be great to see, as the Japanese are usually overly dramatic in their reactions, but I don't know if or how bad the problem would be regarding authorities or tipping. Would love to hear more if and when you find out!

I don't know about Japan, but my wife once tiped a waitress in Korea. The waitress chased her down outside and insisted that she take the money back. It seemed to be a burden or possible insult. Look forward to see someone has insight into the Japanese culture regarding tipping.

I do realize it's a non-tipping culture, as I've tried to tip someone in a restaurant before and they thought I was trying to overpay. I do feel like they are polite beyond belief, though, and if you had a hat out with some yen in it, they would realize and throw in.
As for Nick W, yes going and finding out for myself will definitely be the best answer. This is also a forum, though, and without people discussing things like this there would be nothing to read and branch off thoughts and ideas from. |

Here's some stuff I found on Bing (yeah, I use Bing. You wanna make something of it? )
http://www.bing.com/search?q=street+perf......eebd62ed Most of its videos, doesn't seem to be too much on the financial aspect of busking in Japan. Here's Google's list; https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=busking+in+Tokyo Notice the first one is "Attacked by Yakuza." Incidently, you don't get free tattos, trust me! :goodluck:

Tipping is really an American thing...and a new thing at that. just made up about 50 years ago. kind of a shame that a waitress's next meal is dependent on my 20%. how about they pay the servers more and charge more for the food. That way we wont have to tip. on that note, during street shows I never use the word tip for this same reason. tip is too weak to receive when you have a huge crowd in front of you. best to use words like contribution or donation or something else original.

I don't know. The servers at my work make my whole weeks pay in one day. They don't seem to be starving.

A 1-man band I know tried Japan - said he got stuck there in a no-tipping culture. He said the crowds were huge - approaching 500 - but he was merely a living curiosity.
