This Aronson oldie is in Card Ideas (reprinted in BTP). I have avoided this and The Aronson Artifice given the significant gaffed deck requirements, but since finding a good source of customized force decks (I use Martini's Magic for this) I have had plenty of the required duplicates on hand.
I think the effect is pretty impressive. Aside from the extensive requirement for duplicates, the only tough part of the trick is a deck switch (or, more correctly, a 2/3-of-a-deck switch). Simon describes a bold in-the-lap switch for a seated performer, but as I would like to do this standing up over a table I am interested in alternatives. Compared to impromptu routines the performer handles the deck very openly, and I think the result is quite magical. My question is whether anyone out there is actually doing it. It is one of Simon's earliest published creations, and I suspect even he doesn't do it that much any more. Grateful for thoughts on this. Along with the equally venerable Aronson Artifice, I think this is a fine use of a specialized stack and the old trick is well worth a new look. Les |

Les, as I recall Aronson has said that he came up with this version primarily as a magician fooler to work on with his cronies during the 'Saturday Sessions' and he has stated that it may not be the most practical version of the effect. I suspect while a magician would notice the differences between this and other 'spectator cuts the aces' tricks, a layperson would not. Then again, I'm pretty biased toward the version I do and am not likely to change it, but I certainly agree it is some very nice thinking on his part.

I was reluctant to set up the effect until I figured out that all I needed was a three-way force deck for the duplicate aces and nine indifferent duplicates, and this proved easy enough to scare up.
I think it is an ingenious take on the effect and gives me another opportunity to get comfortable with any number of bold deck switches. |

Steven, I'm still not happy with the Spectator Cuts To The Aces effects I've explored. I'd be interested in your handling.

Atom, the handling I use isn't my own. I've been doing 'Final Verdict' from Bannon's 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' for a long time, and it ticks all my boxes--normal, unprepared deck, spectator makes all the cuts and turns over all the cards, and what handling is required to achieve the outcome is minimal and very well motivated.

I like this SCTA effect because I even fool myself . It also occurred to me that this is a great way to ring in a stacked deck. One sets up the 21 cards indifferent cards in the ace-loaded deck so that the discard pile ends up as a segment of the stack. When the 36 other indifferent cards are swapped in, the full stacked deck is in play and one need only put the aces in the right place. One need choose the nine indifferent duplicates accordingly so this works out, but that shouldn't be too hard to do… |

It's been a while since I played with the Aronson version. I'll have to run through your procedure with cards in hand to really follow this, but I'm heading into the hospital tomorrow. (I've got a herniated, or ruptured, disc in my back which I need to get diagnosed and figured out--all I know right now is that it really hurts). So it may be a while before I have a chance to walk through this but it looks very promising. Thanks for posting it.
