A brief search of Our Magic gave me far too many non answers but what do others think of this great book. I got it free from the CARC summer reading program and finally sat a dredged my way through it. Holy cow, what a great mindset that holds true still today. (although I would love to see it edited or re-written in a modern form). I found it very hard to follow at first but when it hit me... It floored me... Best thing I have done in years was to read this, I have had many moments of enlightenment as to how "My Magic" needs to change. I highly recommend this to anyone beyond a beginner in magic. (I do think it would be hard for a beginner to completely understand - 'not saying I completely understand it after 20+ years in magic but what an awakening)

Hey Poof Daddy,
I'm on my second reading of it after procuring a hard copy recently. I love going through those first 100 pages when its pure theory, but with very real application. Agree this is tough going with how they wrote, but like you mentioned, eventually you get the hang of it. I would love to see something like an annotated Our Magic, that has additional commentary and even a counter viewpoint as well. Next after my reading of this is NeoMagic by Sharpe! Take care, Green Knight |

"Our Magic" is a classic for a reason. I personally haven't had difficulty reading it but then I have read quit a lot from that time period.
Here is a suggestion. Write out the 24 rules and annotate your list as you take another read. Basically rewrite things with your own words. You will be richly rewarded. NeoMagic is a good read. But be prepared to ponder things much more than you did with "Our Magic". ~ Dan |

Thanks Dan,
I wrote out the rules and am now reading each chapter again. All the best, GreenKnight |

I found it's good to scan Our Magic and see what subject or paragraph stands out. Then "dive in".
It can be a "chewy" read.

Shakespeare takes a bit of re-reading before one gets the hang of it. It isn't surprising that when you read Hoffman, Sachs, and M & D, the information and advice in its pages is pretty much contemporary, and evergreen. It's almost as if the Victorian language in these books is a cryptic language to solve before getting to the mother load of information. I recently read Hoffman's description of the Classic Pass in Modern Magic, and it's all there: The finger placements, and the transposition of the two halves. The approach to this sleight was clearly described over 125 years ago.

I am actually in the process of reading through it again (and even picking up more). Annotating sounds like a great idea and since it is a ebook from CARC I can do that without damaging the original. Thanks for the great idea.
